Ordinance to amend Islamabad Local Government Act issued

ISLAMABAD(National times)- President Asif Ali Zardari has issued ordinance to amend the Islamabad Local Government Act on Monday. The Metropolitan Corporation system has been abolished, and the federal capital has been divided into three Town Corporations based on the three National Assembly constituencies. The head will be referred to as the Mayor of the Town Corporation or the Chairman of the Union Council (UC). Each town will have as many Union Councils as notified by the government. Each Town Corporation will have one Mayor and two Deputy Mayors, and will include four women members, one farmer or worker, one trader or businessman, one youth, and one non-Muslim member. Elections of general members at the UC level will be held through secret ballot. The government will appoint an administrator where local government is not functional. The local government or administrator has been granted the authority to impose taxes, fees, rents, tolls, and other charges. Proposed taxes, after government approval, will be presented to the National Assembly. The local government or administrator will be bound to act in accordance with the directions of the federal government.
