Constitutional amendment has strengthened individuals, not institutions: Hafiz Hamdullah

ISLAMABAD(National times)- Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) central leader Hafiz Hamdullah on Wednesday said that the constitutional amendment has strengthened individuals, not institutions. Speaking on Dunya News programme “Dunya Meher Bokhari Kay Sath”, Hafiz Hamdullah said that these are the same people who drafted the 1973 Constitution, yet none of them felt any shame. He further said that the interests of the country and public are kept in mind while making laws — but there isn’t a single clause in the entire amendment that reflects national or public interest. He stated that if the goal is to strengthen the country, then institutions must be strengthened. This amendment has not empowered the Parliament; rather, the government is fighting against the Constitution. He warned that if judges resign, the state will be shaken. Hafiz Hamdullah further said that the politics of the PPP and the PML-N has completely collapsed. “They should go among the people and see — they have no standing left. Every child in the country knows what is happening,” he remarked. Speaking in the same programme, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and Prime Minister’s Coordinator, Ikhtiar Wali, said that PML-N is not waging a war against the Constitution, but defending it. Ikhtiar Wali said that their goal is to correct what is wrong. He added that Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) opposed the 27th Amendment, which is their democratic right — though they had supported the 26th Amendment.
