Maryam Nawaz urges joint action against climate change at COP30 in Brazil

BELÉM(National times)- Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed the need for collective efforts to combat climate change during her address at the COP30 conference in Brazil. She said Punjab – the land of five rivers – is utilising modern technology to tackle environmental challenges. Under the Suthra Punjab (Clean Punjab) initiative, cleanliness in every street and neighbourhood is being ensured. The chief minister added that all industries and brick kilns causing pollution are being strictly monitored. The provincial government is taking significant measures to protect wildlife and forests, with special emphasis on large-scale tree plantation campaigns. Maryam Nawaz highlighted that it is impossible to address climate change without preserving forests. Transparency and merit are being ensured across all sectors, while drone technology is being used to monitor forest protection efforts. She further said that modern technology is being employed to safeguard wildlife, and the vision of a “Green and Digital Punjab” is being realized through the promotion of electric vehicles and e-bikes. Maryam Nawaz concluded by saying that a special force has been established under the Punjab Wildlife Act. Pakistan is among the ten countries most affected by climate change, and Punjab has faced historic floods. “We all must take responsibility to ensure a safer environment for future generations,” she said.
