LAHORE(National times)- The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed all relevant departments to submit a comprehensive progress report by November 12 on the implementation of measures to curb smog in the provincial capital. Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while hearing multiple petitions related to smog prevention. During the hearing, lawyers representing various government departments appeared, while a member of the environmental commission informed the court that heavy traffic increases in the city after 11 pm, worsening smog conditions. The DIG Motorway Police told the court that the police had supported the earlier pilot project and remained ready to lend a hand again. Justice Shahid Karim appreciated the police’s cooperation but remarked that the situation would not improve unless vehicle inspections were carried out effectively. The court also sought details from the PHA’s counsel about restaurants and barbecue setups operating inside public parks, asking how much park area was being used. The PHA representative assured the court that an inspection would be conducted and a response submitted by tomorrow.

Justice Karim, however, warned that cutting trees for commercial purposes was unacceptable, saying, “If it’s all about making money, then you might as well chop down every tree in Lahore — and that’s not the right approach.” The court also demanded a report from the Cantonment Board on the cutting of trees outside a private bakery. Justice Karim stressed that only concrete and well-coordinated actions could help reduce smog, including traffic control, strict vehicle inspections, preservation of parks and greenery, and better management of heavy traffic during nighttime. All departments have been directed to submit compliance reports by November 12.
