Commission set up for protection of journalists and media professionals

ISLAMABAD(National times)- The federal government has officially formed the Commission for the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals, a dedicated body aimed at ensuring the safety and rights of media workers across Pakistan. The commission has been set up under the Protection of Journalists and Media Professionals Act, 2021, and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has issued a formal notification announcing its establishment. According to the notification, the commission will consist of 12 members. The Principal Information Officer of the Information Ministry will serve as an ex-officio member, while the Director General of the Ministry of Human Rights has also been nominated. Other members include Secretary PRA Naveed Akbar, Ghulam Nabi Yousafzai, and representatives from the National Press Club as well as factions of PFUJ, ensuring broad representation from the journalist community. The commission also features senior media personalities such as Hassan Abbas, Tahir Hassan Khan, Tamsilah Chishti, Nadia Saboohi, and Khalil. Representatives from national and provincial press unions have also been added to the body. The commission will be responsible for keeping an eye on journalists’ rights, monitoring security measures, and ensuring that necessary protections are put in place. Officials say the body will get down to work soon, taking charge of its responsibilities without delay.
