{"id":55090,"date":"2023-01-20T16:03:01","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T16:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=55090"},"modified":"2023-01-20T16:03:01","modified_gmt":"2023-01-20T16:03:01","slug":"chinas-video-game-makers-come-in-from-the-cold-as-crackdown-eases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2023\/55090\/","title":{"rendered":"China&#8217;s video game makers come in from the cold as crackdown eases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>HONG KONG (National Times) &#8211; China\u2019s end to a sweeping crackdown on its video games market is expected to breathe life back into the battered industry this year, but remaining restrictions on some content and economic headwinds will limit the extent of the recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing\u2019s tough curbs in 2021 laid waste to the once-booming industry, shaving over half of the market value of sector leaders like Tencent Holdings (0700.HK) and NetEase Inc (9999.HK) and shrinking the world\u2019s biggest gaming market for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of Tencent, the world\u2019s largest gaming company, and NetEase rose this week after China\u2019s video games regulator granted the first gaming licences in 2023, the latest sign that the clampdown is ending.<\/p>\n<p>Analysts expect China to approve between 800 and 900 games this year, potentially more, topping the 512 titles released in 2022 and 755 in 2022. Between August 2021 and March 2022, no titles were approved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe the approvals indicate a more benign regulatory environment for the China gaming industry,\u201d JP Morgan analysts wrote in a note on Wednesday. \u201cWith rich game supply, we are more positive on overall online game market growth during Chinese New Year, a traditional strong season for the China online game market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The crackdown was aimed at curbing gaming addiction among youth and purging content the government did not approve of, with companies asked to delete content that was violent, deemed to celebrate wealth or foster the worship of celebrities.<\/p>\n<p>That sent game sales in China tumbling more than 10% to 269.5 billion yuan ($40.1 billion) in 2022, the first decline since figures became available in 2003, according to a report by CNG, a government-backed industry data firm.<\/p>\n<p>In November last year, Tencent, the world\u2019s biggest gaming company, reported its domestic gaming revenue shrank 7% in the third quarter. Its overall gaming revenue fell 4.45%.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of Tencent, China\u2019s most valuable company, dropped 24.7% in 2022 but have risen 21% so far this year, recouping nearly all of last year\u2019s losses.
