{"id":50641,"date":"2022-12-03T06:30:41","date_gmt":"2022-12-03T06:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=50641"},"modified":"2022-12-03T10:00:34","modified_gmt":"2022-12-03T10:00:34","slug":"us-targets-pakistan-over-religious-freedom-violations-goes-soft-on-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2022\/50641\/","title":{"rendered":"US targets Pakistan over religious freedom violations, goes soft on India"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON (National Times) \u2013 The United States has designated Pakistan as a country of particular concern under the Religious Freedom Act over violations during 2022, but India was let off despite serious violations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAround the world, governments and non-state actors harass, threaten, jail, and even kill individuals on account of their beliefs,\u201d said Secretary of State Antony Blinken while announcing the designations on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn some instances, they stifle individuals\u2019 freedom of religion or belief to exploit opportunities for political gain.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8220;The United States will not stand by in the face of these abuses,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, \u201ctoday, I am announcing designations against Burma (Myanmar), the People\u2019s Republic of China, Cuba, Eritrea, Iran, Nicaragua, the DPRK (North Korea), Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern \u2026for having engaged in or tolerated particularly severe violations of religious freedom\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The US also placed Cuba, Nicaragua and Russia s Wagner mercenary group to a blacklist on international religious freedom, opening the path to potential sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The designation of Cuba is the latest sign of pressure on the island by the administration of President Joe Biden, which has largely shunned previous Democratic president Barack Obama s policy of seeking an opening with the longtime US nemesis.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan was first place on the list in Dec 2018 during the Trump\u2019s tenure and retained it in 2020 as well.
