{"id":38589,"date":"2022-07-23T06:32:47","date_gmt":"2022-07-23T06:32:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=38589"},"modified":"2022-07-23T06:32:47","modified_gmt":"2022-07-23T06:32:47","slug":"google-fires-software-engineer-who-claimed-its-ai-chatbot-is-sentient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2022\/38589\/","title":{"rendered":"Google fires software engineer who claimed its AI chatbot is sentient"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Web Desk (National Times) &#8211; Alphabet Inc\u2019s (GOOGL.O) Google said on Friday it has dismissed a senior software engineer who claimed the company\u2019s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot LaMDA was a self-aware person.<\/p>\n<p>Google, which placed software engineer Blake Lemoine on leave last month, said he had violated company policies and that it found his claims on LaMDA to be &#8220;wholly unfounded.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s regrettable that despite lengthy engagement on this topic, Blake still chose to persistently violate clear employment and data security policies that include the need to safeguard product information,&#8221; a Google spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Google said that LaMDA &#8211; Language Model for Dialogue Applications &#8211; was built on the company\u2019s research showing Transformer-based language models trained on dialogue could learn to talk about essentially anything.<\/p>\n<p>Google and many leading scientists were quick to dismiss Lemoine\u2019s views as misguided, saying LaMDA is simply a complex algorithm designed to generate convincing human language.<\/p>\n<p>Lemoine\u2019s dismissal was first reported by Big Technology, a tech and society newsletter. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web Desk (National Times) &#8211; Alphabet Inc\u2019s (GOOGL.O) Google said on Friday it has dismissed a senior software engineer who claimed the company\u2019s artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot LaMDA was a self-aware person.
