ISLAMABAD(National Times)- Defence Minister Khawaja Asif said on Wednesday that Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain\u2019s remarks regarding corruption in Punjab were \u201cbeyond my understanding\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During a talk show on a private television channel on Monday, the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) leader had lavished praise on former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Pervez Elahi. However, he had also criticised the present provincial administration, headed by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, alleging that he regularly heard complaints of corruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Tuesday, CM Maryam had sent a Rs5 billion defamation notice to the minister, demanding that he retract his remarks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a post on the social media platform X on Wednesday, Asif said, \u201cChaudhry Salik Sahib is very respected in my eyes; I respect his elders just as I respect my own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHis statement regarding corruption in Punjab is beyond my limited political understanding. Corruption is the biggest issue in our society and it is the collective responsibility of the political leadership, both at the central and provincial levels, to rid the country of this curse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He went on to say that Salik was a part of \u201cboth the federal and provincial governments and the leadership of both these governments lies with the PML-N\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIf this statement is part of some future political agenda \u2014 to target Maryam Nawaz\u2019s government and carve out space for himself in Punjab and at the Centre to secure his political future \u2014 then it starts to make sense,\u201d Asif said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also praised Maryam\u2019s performance, saying her work across Punjab\u2019s cities and villages and the service standards being set by her government would pose a \u201cvery difficult challenge\u201d for its opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb sought an apology from Salik over his comments, saying that the PML-Q leader was \u201chimself admitting that he has no evidence to support the allegations he made regarding corruption in the Punjab government\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter this, what dignity, justice, and principles demand is clear: an apology should be sought for the lack of evidence and for making baseless allegations, rather than turning the transfer of a single DC into an issue of personal ego,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Punjab minister called on Salik to either fulfil his responsibilities as a minister or step down from his role \u201cinstead of engaging in empty rhetoric about eradicating corruption from society and promoting good governance\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe will not tolerate false and baseless allegations against the chief minister who has set an example of serving the people in Pakistan through hard work and transparency in two and a half years,\u201d Aurangzeb asserted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Acknowledging that corruption existed as a \u201cdisease in every society in the world\u201d, she contended that Punjab was the only province where the chief minister herself was \u201cleading the campaign to eliminate corruption\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What did Salik say?
During his interview, Salik had also questioned lavish government spending, particularly the use of official aircraft, arguing that public representatives should remain mindful of the country\u2019s economic difficulties. Officials using government aircraft, he said, should be required to demonstrate the tangible outcomes and public benefits of their trips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He further called for greater ministerial accountability, proposing that the federal as well as provincial ministers should be empowered to perform their duties, but also be held answerable for their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The remarks carry particular political significance given the fractured relationship between the Chaudhry family and the PTI leadership. Salik, the younger son of PML-Q president Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, belongs to a family whose political loyalties have diverged sharply since the ouster of Imran Khan\u2019s government in 2022 through a no-confidence vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While Elahi and his son, former federal minister Moonis Elahi, aligned themselves with the PTI, the Shujaat family chose to stand with the Sharifs. Salik\u2019s elder brother, Shafay Hussain, is also part of CM Maryam\u2019s cabinet in Punjab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Tuesday, CM Maryam said the PML-Q leader\u2019s anger stemmed from neither corruption nor progress. She said the issue was that she had changed the deputy commissioner of Gujrat a few days earlier, whereas Salik wanted a DC of his choice to be appointed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The defamation notice \u2014 sent to Salik, ARY News host Naeem Ashraf Butt and the channel\u2019s chairman \u2014 said the minister\u2019s remarks were not just an expression of disagreement with policy or \u201cordinary political criticism\u201d, but conveyed \u201cserious imputations\u201d of widespread corruption in the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The notice called on them to retract the remarks, publish an \u201cunconditional and unequivocal apology and clarification\u201d and \u201cremove or suitably correct\u201d the portions of the interview in question. It also demanded a sum of Rs5bn in damages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Meanwhile, responding to Maryam\u2019s remarks, Salik said he stood by his statement and had responded honestly to a question during the interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister\u2019s remarks had also drawn a sharp rebuttal from Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari, who advised Salik not to \u201cbite the hand that feeds him\u201d.
