{"id":135665,"date":"2026-10-30T21:06:50","date_gmt":"2026-10-30T16:06:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=135665"},"modified":"2026-10-30T21:06:52","modified_gmt":"2026-10-30T16:06:52","slug":"vatican-says-pope-leo-xiv-voted-in-us-midterm-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/135665\/","title":{"rendered":"Vatican says Pope Leo XIV voted in US midterm elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vatican(National Times)- Pope Leo XIV, the Catholic Church\u2019s first US-born pontiff, has voted in the United States midterm elections, submitting his mail-in ballot in Chicago, the Vatican said on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the first known time a pope has voted in a political election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The head of the world\u2019s 1.4 billion Catholics, who has clashed with US President Donald Trump, believes in \u201cthe right and the duty of citizens to participate in democratic processes,\u201d the Vatican said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Chicago-born pontiff \u201chas exercised his right to vote as a United States citizen, whenever he was eligible to do so,\u201d the Vatican said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Holy See Press Office confirms that in keeping with this long-standing practice of civic participation, he has submitted his mail-in ballot in Chicago,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rift earlier this year between US President Donald Trump and the pope sparked global headlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leo and Trump repeatedly clashed over papal criticism of the harsh crackdown on immigration in the United States and of the war on Iran, with Trump calling the pontiff \u201cweak\u201d on crime and \u201cterrible\u201d on foreign policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pope said he was \u201cnot afraid\u201d of Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crucial US midterm elections are scheduled to be held on November 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robert Francis Prevost, as he was known before his election to the papacy, spent nearly two decades as a missionary, then bishop, in Peru and has both US and Peruvian citizenship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Holy Father has also confirmed that, during his years of residence in Peru he exercised his right to vote whenever he was eligible to do so,\u201d the Vatican said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vatican(National Times)- Pope Leo XIV, the Catholic Church\u2019s first US-born pontiff, has voted in the United States midterm elections, submitting his mail-in ballot in Chicago, the Vatican said on Friday.
