{"id":135485,"date":"2026-10-27T22:20:03","date_gmt":"2026-10-27T17:20:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=135485"},"modified":"2026-10-27T22:20:07","modified_gmt":"2026-10-27T17:20:07","slug":"in-bid-to-boost-exports-govt-sets-120-day-deadline-for-roadmap-to-expand-shrimp-farming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/135485\/","title":{"rendered":"In bid to boost exports, govt sets 120-day deadline for roadmap to expand shrimp farming"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ISLAMABAD(National Times)- A sub-committee constituted by the prime minister has set a 120-day deadline to prepare a roadmap to expand shrimp farming, improve value addition and boost exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Tuesday chaired a meeting of the sub-committee on aquaculture and the shrimp value chain, according to a <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pid.gov.pk\/site\/press_detail\/34535\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 120-day deadline was set as part of a broader 24-month implementation and review process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting brought together provincial fisheries officials and relevant federal institutions to develop a \u201ccoordinated strategy\u201d for transforming aquaculture into a competitive, export-oriented industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PM Shehbaz has termed achieving export-led economic growth as the government\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2005209\"><u>top priority<\/u><\/a>, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2007283\"><u>federal budget<\/u><\/a> for the current fiscal year (FY27) formulated with the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2009454#:~:text=Aurangzeb%20stated%20that%20a%20%E2%80%9Csustainable%20and%20inclusive%20export%2Dled%20growth%20that%20increases%20productivity%E2%80%9D%20was%20the%20fundamental%20objective%20of%20the%20government%20and%20the%20budget.\"><u>objective<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sub-committee will prepare a comprehensive report based on verified data and stakeholder recommendations, Tuesday\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe exercise will establish a baseline for the sector, identify bottlenecks across the value chain and propose measures to improve production, processing and export competitiveness,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the sub-committee approved seven technical working groups and a projection and costing cell to prepare 14 reports and export projections, assigning responsibilities to the relevant institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also adopted a common framework for data collection and validation, prioritising challenges, developing reform proposals and monitoring progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An initial 14-day action plan was approved, with participating institutions directed to complete their assigned tasks within the stipulated deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting was attended by representatives of the fisheries departments of Punjab, Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Officials from the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan and the ministries of food security and maritime affairs were also present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the statement, Chaudhry said the exercise would identify constraints and develop practical solutions to expand shrimp farming, strengthen value addition and increase exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that the federal government would work with provincial governments and other stakeholders to pool expertise and develop a coordinated approach to harness the country\u2019s potential in shrimp farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sindh\u2019s secretary for livestock and fisheries was quoted as saying that a feasibility study was being prepared for a 3,500-acre shrimp farm in the province. He also highlighted the need to address challenges in value addition and traceability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Punjab\u2019s Aquaculture and Fisheries Secretary Rana Saleem Afzal said that relevant departments of the provincial government were working to introduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1993578\">shrimp farming in Punjab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMany areas in Punjab were non-cultivable due to high salinity in the underground water, and efforts were under way to establish hatcheries in such areas,\u201d he was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, he acknowledged that establishing an effective value chain remained a major challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other participants presented proposals to improve shrimp processing and value addition for exports as well as local consumption, as shrimps and prawns remain in high demand in Punjab and KP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was agreed that the next meeting would review identified bottlenecks as well as available baseline data essential for promoting shrimp farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1993578\">noted<\/a> that progress had been achieved in developing infrastructure for shrimp farming projects in Sargodha Estate, Aliwala and Shahgarh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Punjab had launched the Blue Economy Programme to develop unused lands and introduce a modern scientific system for shrimp farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, the federal government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2016028\">said<\/a> Pakistan\u2019s exports of fish and fish preparations had reached a record $568 million in the previous fiscal year (FY26).
