PESHAWER(National Times)- Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi challenged PTI protesters on Friday to dare and cross Swabi, a KP district that borders Punjab\u2019s Attock and which the opposition party in the Centre has announced as the eventual destination of its long march.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The route plan for the march, being carried out to demand the release of jailed PTI founder Imran Khan, has undergone multiple changes since its launch on Oct 4. While the party initially vowed to march towards Islamabad, its final destination seemingly remains tentative as the KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has yet to announce the plan for the trek beyond Swabi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
So far, the march has remained within KP, where the PTI is in power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The protesters were in Peshawar on Thursday and are expected to reach Charsadda today, as political temperatures between the PTI and the federal government remain high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As tensions remained high, Kundi raised doubt on the realisation on the PTI\u2019s plan to reach Swabi on Oct 11.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey are probably going to Charsadda today, then they might go to Mardan, and after that they might end up reaching Afghanistan through Dir,\u201d he said while addressing a press conference in Peshawar. \u201cBecause whenever they turn towards Swabi, their legs start shaking, and their hearts tremble [\u2026] If they have any self-respect, reach Swabi tomorrow and cross it, or even step inside it. I will accept that you are a revolutionary party that aims to make a naya (new) Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Continuing to rail against the party, he said senior PTI leaders were \u201csitting in drawing rooms\u201d in Islamabad while others were in \u201chiding\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey say that they have run successful mobilisation campaigns across Sindh and Punjab; did you see anyone from these provinces on their long march\u2019s truck?\u201d he questioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Reacting to the PTI\u2019s claims that KP lawmakers and cabinet members were being \u201cabducted\u201d, Kundi said: \u201cYou (KP CM Afridi) should tell who is abducting your ministers as you are the chief executive of the province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou cannot protect your ministers, MPAs, and MNAs; how will you protect my people, the province and the nation? This is your position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kundi added that the KP CM and his cabinet should resign on \u201cethical grounds\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey say that the SHOs do not listen to them; if no one listens to you, then why are you sitting [in the government]? Only to make money or for corruption,\u201d he remarked, adding that presently, doctors, teachers, nurses, and municipal officers were observing strikes in KP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The KP governor vowed that \u201cwe will protect our province and fight against terrorism on the front line. We will show such incompetent people [\u2026] how a province is run.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Answering a question, Kundi contended that no province could run without the Centre. \u201cBut these people talk about confrontation with the federal government,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the possibility of governor\u2019s rule or an emergency in KP, the governor said that when the president or the prime minister deem that the situation in the province had worsened to the extent that these options should be availed, they would make a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhenever the federal government will seek report on province\u2019s situation; we will provide as per the information we have,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In response to another question, Kundi took a jibe at the PTI, saying the party had turned its long march into \u201cLucky Irani Circus, travelling from city to city [\u2026] But whenever they turn to Swabi, they opt to take a U-turn\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also commented on his recent meeting with KP\u2019s chief secretary and inspector general (IG) to discuss the province\u2019s law and order situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The KP CM has taken strong exception to the meeting and called for legislation to provide for the governor\u2019s impeachment for \u201cviolating the Constitution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kundi defended the meeting, saying: \u201cI called the chief secretary and IG because we have no government on the ground in the province; they are busy in their circus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMy province is burning,\u201d he continued, citing recent incidents of terrorism in KP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThey (PTI) have never condemned terrorism. They cannot challenge the terrorists [\u2026] They don\u2019t have any plan to fight terrorism,\u201d he claimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that \u201cterrorism is our red line,\u201d, adding, \u201cWe cannot hand over this province to terrorists. This is our point agenda [\u2026] we will first talk about terrorism, and other things will follow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PTI march began after weekend talks with the federal government failed to bridge their differences for multiple reasons, particularly over the counterterrorism policy. The federal ministers are now also linking differences over the counterterrorism policy with the possibility of an emergency or governor\u2019s rule in KP.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
