{"id":134530,"date":"2026-10-09T08:33:37","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T03:33:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=134530"},"modified":"2026-10-09T08:33:38","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T03:33:38","slug":"opposition-leaders-booked-over-protests-in-india","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/134530\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition leaders booked over protests in India"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEW DELHI(National Times)- Police on Thur\u00adsday registered an FIR against opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, Congress lawmaker Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several others for allegedly forcing their way into the Akashvani Bhavan premises during a Tuesday protest, The Hindu reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FIR followed the detention of about 260 people, including 10 lawmakers, after an opposition INDIA bloc march from parliament toward the Election Commission of India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police said protesters breached barricades and ignored orders to disperse. On Wednesday, the Congress party accused police of using \u201cbrute force\u201d to briefly detain the Gandhis and other lawmakers heading to New Delhi\u2019s Jantar Mantar protest site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police dismissed the claims as an effort to \u201cdefame\u201d the force. \u201cWe are on the ground and, as officers, we also ensure that every kind of legal duty is followed and no illegal, unnecessary actions take place,\u201d senior police officer Shrishti Pandey told the ANI news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congress lawmaker Imran Masood denied any forcible entry, noting other lawmakers accompanied Rahul Gandhi. \u201cThey should not be mistaken that we will back off fearing an FIR,\u201d Masood said, adding that authorities refused to meet them. \u201cNow we will go and sit in front of their houses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demonstrations entered a third day on Thursday as opposition parties, student groups and the \u201cCockroach\u201d youth movement demanded Chief Election Commi\u00adssioner Gyanesh Kumar\u2019s resignation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protesters accuse Prime Mini\u00adster Nar\u00adendra Modi\u2019s Bharatiya Janata Par\u00adty of rigging voter lists in collusion with Ku\u00admar.
