Rawalpindi(National Times)- The army\u2019s top brass on Friday warned that any attempt at creating agitation or a \u201cMay 9-like situation\u201d would be dealt with \u201cdecisive force\u201d, according to the military\u2019s media wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The warning came during the 277th Corps Commanders\u2019 Conference in Rawalpindi, which was presided over by Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201c[The] forum underscored the importance of internal stability and resolved that any attempt to cause agitation or create [a] May 9-like situation, on any pretext whatsoever, will be dealt with decisive force and rule of law, without hesitation and discrimination,\u201d a statement from Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The warning comes as the PTI is gearing up for a long march to Islamabad, to demand the release of former prime minister and party founder Imran Khan. The protest was originally scheduled for Sept 27 but was postponed to Oct 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The party is currently in talks with the government over its long march, with the first round of dialogue taking place earlier in the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is worth mentioning that Imran\u2019s arrest on May 9, 2023, had triggered widespread riots across Pakistan, during which government buildings and military installations \u2014 including the GHQ in Rawalpindi \u2014 were stormed and vandalised. Following the unrest, a crackdown was launched against the PTI, with dozens of terrorism cases lodged against its leaders and supporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Need for \u2018targeted action\u2019 against Afghanistan stressed
According to ISPR, the forum also reviewed the security landscape and resolved to maintain a \u201chigh state of readiness\u201d. It hailed successful counter-terrorism operations, but stressed the need to blend kinetic and non-kinetic measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These included \u201cpeople-centric governance at [the] grassroot level, strategic engagement with [the] public, dismantling of [the] terror-crime nexus operating under patronage of vested interests and police capacity building, in line with the National Action Plan and Vision Azm-i-Istehkam\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Affirming Pakistan\u2019s right to self-defence, the forum noted the need for \u201ctargeted action\u201d against terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, stressing that \u201conly the Taliban\u2019s delusional leadership, facilitating terrorism on behalf of India, bears responsibility for its consequences\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since Sep 21, in the aftermath of terror incidents in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan has carried out three strikes in Afghanistan, targeting terrorist hideouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A day earlier, ISPR Director General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that Pakistan had the right to self-defence and \u201ceverything that is necessary will be done\u201d in response to terrorism emanating from Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia condemned
The army huddle on Friday also welcomed the Makkah Defence Alliance between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye and its contribution to \u201clongstanding strategic and collective defence ties\u201d, the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt (the forum) strongly resented Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, expressed solidarity with the kingdom and affirmed Pakistan\u2019s commitment to the security and sanctity of the Haramain Sharifain,\u201d ISPR added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The defence pact, signed on Aug 7, aims to strengthen collective deterrence and empower its signatory states to treat an attack against one of them as an attack against all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fresh fighting between the Houthis and the Yemeni government has dragged in Riyadh, with the Houthis declaring a maritime blockade on the kingdom and targeting its ships in the Red Sea. Both sides have claimed strikes on each other as tensions remain high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Corps Commander Conference on Friday also reiterated Pakistan\u2019s position on Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and expressed support for resolving the Kashmir dispute, in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his concluding remarks, CDF Munir commended the formations for their operational preparedness and professionalism, directing the commanders to bolster intelligence-based operations and enhance combat capabilities through the adoption of modern technology, training and multi-domain integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe expressed confidence that the armed forces, with unwavering support of the nation, remain fully prepared to safeguard Pakistan\u2019s sovereignty, territorial integrity and national security,\u201d ISPR said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The forum also offered prayers for the martyrs of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and civil society and paid tribute to their sacrifices.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
