{"id":134013,"date":"2026-09-29T22:56:24","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T17:56:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=134013"},"modified":"2026-09-29T22:56:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T17:56:32","slug":"somali-forces-recover-oil-tanker-carrying-pakistani-crewmen-over-5-months-after-hijacking-by-pirates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/134013\/","title":{"rendered":"Somali forces recover oil tanker carrying Pakistani crewmen over 5 months after hijacking by pirates"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KARACHI(National Times)-  Somali maritime police said on Tuesday that they had recovered an oil tanker, the MT Honour 25, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2000038\">hijacked<\/a> by armed pirates off the coast of Puntland, Somalia on April 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Honour 25 \u2014 a Palau-flagged oil tanker \u2014 had 19 crew members on board, including 10 Pakistanis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe naval and ground units of the Puntland Maritime Police Force conducted a planned operation in the Dharin-Bar area of Bandar Beyla district,\u201d the maritime police said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Dawn<\/em> has contacted the Foreign Office (FO) for a comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, Ayesha Ameen, the wife of a fitter on the ship, told <em>Dawn<\/em> between sobs that there were reports of casualties among Pakistanis on the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said that they were not able to confirm the names of the deceased yet, but her husband, Ameen Bin Shams, was reportedly among the injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe don\u2019t know how bad the injuries are,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are trying to establish contact with the ship\u2019s captain on the numbers that we have. But our calls are not being answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs far as we know, the bodies are still on the ship, as are the injured. There is no one to tell us if they will be moved. We are going mad here,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1cKu3iMYSB\/\">Initial reports<\/a> attributed to the crew suggest that there have been five deaths and four people have been injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apart from Pakistanis, the vessel\u2019s crew also included seven Indonesians, an Indian and a Sri Lankan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After its hijacking in April, months had passed with no progress either in negotiations or the payment of the ransom, said to be around $3 million, for the recovery of the hostages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hostages were said to be victims of an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2018074\">ownership crisis<\/a>\u201d, as it was not clearly established who owned the ship \u2014 the man previously thought to be an owner was later revealed to be more likely a middleman who hired them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since its hijack, the crew had made several emotional videos and audio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2021700\">appeals<\/a>, reporting that they had run out of clean water, food and medicine. Meanwhile, their families <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2029231\">launched<\/a> an international appeal, calling on foreign governments, the United Nations (UN) and the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to take coordinated action to help secure the release of their loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For its part, the FO maintained that it remained \u201cactively engaged\u201d to secure the release of the sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, in a meeting with the International Maritime Organisation\u2019s head, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar pressed for \u201curgent and effective institutional intervention\u201d for the return of the Pakistani sailors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier that month, he had also directed \u201cstakeholders\u201d to intensify diplomatic engagement with national and international partners to facilitate the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is a developing story that is being updated as the situation evolves.
