KYIV(National Times)- A Russian drone hit a passenger train on Ukraine\u2019s border with Nato member Poland on Sunday, shortly after former British prime minister Boris Johnson, Sweden\u2019s ex-premier Carl Bildt and other European diplomats had used the same line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The train, on a route frequently used by foreign delegations returning from Kyiv, was attacked just two kilometres from the Polish border, Ukraine\u2019s railway operator said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There were no casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThis wasn\u2019t our train, but the one just minutes after us by the border crossing. It was evacuated as the drone approached and no one was hurt,\u201d Carl Bildt said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He and other politicians were heading to Poland by train after attending a conference in Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt is entirely possible that the Russian drone\u2019s intended target was the diplomatic train, which departed the station earlier than scheduled after train timetables were adjusted in real time because of the constant threat of Russian strikes,\u201d Ukraine\u2019s railway operator said on Telegram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russia\u2019s defence ministry said it had targeted infrastructure facilitating military cargoes from Europe in western Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Boris Johnson, who was also on the train that left the station shortly before the strike, condemned the attack as \u201crandom and senseless\u201d in a post on Instagram.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With the front line largely static, both Moscow and Kyiv have intensified long-distance strikes in recent weeks to try to shift momentum in the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski described Russia\u2019s increasing attacks on Nato\u2019s doorstep as \u201can escalation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier on Sunday a truck less than one kilometre from Ukraine\u2019s border with Poland was also hit, prompting the Dorohusk-Yahodyn crossing point to briefly halt operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Russia has begun targeting Ukraine\u2019s border crossings with its Western allies in recent weeks, part of a growing campaign by both sides to erode the other\u2019s economic infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Strike near Zaporizhzhia N-plant<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Hostilities show no signs of letting up. In the Russian-held part of Ukraine\u2019s southeastern Zaporizhzhia region, the head of Russia\u2019s state nuclear energy company Rosatom accused Ukraine of striking fuel trucks close to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station, Europe\u2019s largest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant has been controlled by Russia since March 2022, and remains close to the front line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In Russia itself, the mayor of the city of Nizhnekamsk, in the Volga River region of Tatarstan, said that \u201ccivilian and industrial\u201d targets in the city had been struck by Ukrainian drones, causing two deaths and several more injuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mayor Radmir Belyaev did not clarify which targets had been struck, but the city hosts a major oil refinery which has been attacked in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ukrainian authorities did not immediately comment on the strike on Nizhnekamsk, but did say they had struck another refinery in the southern Krasnodar region.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
