{"id":132148,"date":"2026-08-29T21:49:19","date_gmt":"2026-08-29T16:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=132148"},"modified":"2026-08-29T21:49:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-29T16:49:20","slug":"govt-apologises-for-temporary-night-time-loadshedding-due-to-unavailability-of-rlng","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/132148\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt apologises for \u2018temporary\u2019 night-time loadshedding due to unavailability of RLNG"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KARACHI(National Times)- The government on Saturday apologised to consumers for electricity loadshedding during the night, attributing it to the unavailability of regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), and assured them that load management would be reduced \u201cas soon as\u201d the delayed RLNG cargoes arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, the Power Division spokesperson said temporary load management of 1.5 to three hours had been carried out during last night\u2019s peak hours due to a 3,600MW shortfall resulting from the unavailability of RLNG after a cargo failed to arrive on time. The situation was compounded by a 195MW decline in generation from Mangla Dam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furnace oil-based power plants were also brought into operation during peak hours so that the electricity demand in the country could be met during the night hours, the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis temporary load management will be reduced as soon as the RLNG cargoes arrive,\u201d it stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Power Division stressed that consumers needed to \u201cmoderate their electricity usage during peak hours at night so that load management can be kept to a minimum\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere is no load management during the day. However, in areas where load management is carried out due to losses, electricity is being supplied as per the schedule,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The statement concluded with an apology for the \u201ctemporary load management during night hours due to the unavailability of RLNG\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government had also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1991961\">apologised<\/a>&nbsp;to power consumers in April for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1991864\/frequency-of-power-gas-outages-surges-across-punjab\">loadshedding<\/a>&nbsp;exceeding the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1991664\">promised 2.25 hours<\/a>, arising out of lower water availability for power generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US-Iran war, which began on February 28, has disrupted the supply of RLNG cargoes from Qatar via the Strait of Hormuz. This resulted in the government purchasing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1998007\">five<\/a>&nbsp;expensive cargoes from the spot market in July, with the sale price of RLNG witnessing the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2019820\">biggest-ever increase<\/a>&nbsp;in the commodity\u2019s decade-long history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, the cost of RLNG-based power generation&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2023808\">surged<\/a>&nbsp;by a record 242 per cent to Rs47.4 per unit in July, from less than Rs14 in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chiefly because of the LNG factor, the power companies have sought a Rs2.52 per unit increase in fuel cost adjustment (FCA) to consumers across the country in September bills despite 73pc generation in July from cheaper domestic, predominantly zero-cost fuel sources.
