Nuwakot,Nepal(National Times)- Devastating floods near Nepal\u2019s border with China this week have killed at least 675 people in Nepal, the Himalayan nation\u2019s disaster authority said on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chinese state media earlier confirmed seven dead in Tibet following Wednesday\u2019s disaster, taking the total killed to 682.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescuers in both countries were battling to locate thousands of people missing days after a deadly, tsunami-like wall of water and debris swept through the Himalayan region, engulfing entire villages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The number of missing in Nepal remained constant at 2,426, after a sharp hike in numbers on Saturday morning. That missing list includes 517 foreigners, as well as 933 workers on hydropower projects on the river where the torrent smashed down, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The number of missing also includes 45 Nepali Army soldiers, 40 police officers, and 19 immigration and customs officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In India, authorities said they had recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal, believed to be flood victims. However, they are not included in the toll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rescue worker Kawan Koirala, from the Nepal Scout Disaster Response Team, said they were struggling in thick, leg-sucking mud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cPeople want their want their family\u2019s body back, either dead or alive, but we cannot find them\u2026 you can see the mud,\u201d he told AFP, exhausted after an 18 hour shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US Geological Survey said the disaster on Wednesday on the Tibet-Nepal border was caused by a glacial collapse that created a torrent of debris downstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Those that made it out say they have lost everything and now face an agonising wait to discover the fate of missing loved ones, and the prospect of rebuilding their lives from nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAll the settlements near the river were swept away. There is nothing left,\u201d survivor Buddhi Ram Dangol told AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThere is nothing left.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At Bidur\u2019s army base, a key rescue hub in the same district, relatives crowded around lists of rescued people pasted on a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Samjhana Thing said she had been waiting three days for news of her missing brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t know anything. Hopefully he is in a safe place,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have come here looking for my son,\u201d said Kalka Sharda, scanning the list in desperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an area home to vast energy infrastructure projects, Nepal\u2019s disaster authority listed 933 hydropower workers among the missing, along with 517 foreigners, including trekkers and pilgrims to Tibet\u2019s sacred Mount Kailash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Risk of lake burst near disaster site wanes<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The threat of a lake formed after the glacier collapse has eased, Chinese authorities said on Saturday, as it appears to have shrunk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Satellite images from Thursday to Saturday morning suggest that water in the lake, which straddles the border between China\u2019s Tibet region and Nepal at the confluence of two rivers, has been slowly flowing out and gradually reducing the reservoir, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing the Water Resources Ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
By Saturday afternoon, parts of the lake bed had become visible, CCTV reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ministry said satellite imagery of the lake on the Purepu Tsangpo river showed it covered 99,000 square metres early on Saturday, roughly the size of 14 soccer pitches, having shrunk by 21,000 square metres since Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Enormous\u2019 trauma<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The trauma of Wednesday\u2019s catastrophe has been \u201cenormous\u201d, and as many as 93,000 people may have been affected, the Red Cross said, with the death toll expected to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emergency teams worked flat out to find survivors as widespread devastation left communities short of food and water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fears of further flooding have compounded the search for the missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The deluge of ice and mud caused huge lakes, and one of these formations has become a risk of further floods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Tibet, where Chinese authorities are the only source of information, Beijing had paused its rescue operation at the hardest-hit area of Gyirong over the risk of renewed flooding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the Nepali side, soldiers were trying desperately to drill through to 100 people trapped in the tunnel of the Trishuli 3A hydropower project on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The prime minister\u2019s office said teams had begun \u201cclearing mud and debris\u201d to open the entrance, while a specialised Indian tunnel rescue unit had arrived to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nepal reported a death toll of 626 people on Saturday. There are 2,426 people, including hundreds of foreigners, who are out of contact in Nepal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Across the border in Tibet, which is largely inaccessible to foreign journalists, seven people died and 554 remain missing, the state Xinhua news agency said on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Authorities also said they had evacuated 555 stranded tourists and 499 Chinese residents from Tibet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018All swept away\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On the Nepali side of the border, the military located people trapped in the tunnel of the Trishuli 3A hydropower project, where they were working to find a way in to extract the survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some 350 workers and residents have been brought to safety from the site, he added, but efforts were ongoing to rescue more than a hundred trapped in the same area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Workers rescued from other dam projects along the Trishuli valley described a disaster that unfolded with terrifying speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Buddha Tamang told AFP he survived only because he was inside a tunnel at the dam where he worked when the flood struck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe senior officers working on the other side, they were all swept away,\u201d Tamang, who was airlifted on Thursday after being marooned for more than 24 hours, told AFP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2018Pilgrimage route\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Scores of Hindu devotees from across the world are among those missing on the border, as many were on a pilgrimage to Tibet\u2019s Mount Kailash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sivaranjani Muthunathan was travelling by bus with 56 others towards the Chinese border when they became stuck in what they thought was a traffic jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
