{"id":131932,"date":"2026-08-26T09:46:57","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T04:46:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=131932"},"modified":"2026-08-26T09:46:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T04:46:58","slug":"judge-rejects-bid-by-ghislaine-maxwell-to-overturn-conviction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/131932\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge rejects bid by Ghislaine Maxwell to overturn conviction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NEW YORK(National Times)- A US federal judge on Tuesday rejected a bid by Ghislaine Maxwell, a key accomplice of notorious sex offender&nbsp;Jeffrey Epstein, to throw out her conviction on sex trafficking charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maxwell, 64, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison and is the only person convicted of a crime in connection with Epstein, who died in a New York jail cell in 2019 while awaiting his own trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his ruling, Judge Paul Engelmayer said that Maxwell\u2019s claims that her constitutional rights at trial and sentencing were violated \u201care all meritless and all or almost all are frivolous\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maxwell was&nbsp;convicted&nbsp;in 2021 of supplying underage girls to Epstein, whose ties to powerful business executives, politicians, celebrities and academics have fueled years of scrutiny and conspiracy theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a new law passed last year, President Donald Trump\u2019s administration has released vast troves of investigative files relating to Epstein \u2014 drawing huge public attention to the case. High-profile figures including Britain\u2019s former prince Andrew have been publicly disgraced for their associations with Epstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In February, Maxwell was subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee to discuss her relations with Epstein but&nbsp;refused&nbsp;to answer any questions. Her lawyer stated she would only speak if Trump granted her clemency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Supreme Court last October declined to hear an appeal by Maxwell of her sex trafficking conviction.
