{"id":131836,"date":"2026-08-25T09:26:44","date_gmt":"2026-08-25T04:26:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=131836"},"modified":"2026-08-25T09:26:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-25T04:26:45","slug":"us-removes-syria-from-state-sponsor-of-terrorism-list","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/131836\/","title":{"rendered":"US removes Syria from state sponsor of terrorism list"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON(National Times)- The United States on Monday delisted Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism, rescinding a decades-old designation that had severely impeded investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US Department of State also revoked its designation of al-Nusrah Front \u2014 also known as Hay\u2019at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) \u2014 as a global terrorist organisation. The Treasury Department followed through with sanctions relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday\u2019s action will help foster additional investment in Syria to promote political and economic stability,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Treasury said the moves were \u201cin line with President (Donald) Trump\u2019s promise to deliver sanctions relief to Syria.\u201d But the agency stressed that its removal of restrictions on Syria \u201cdoes not change Treasury\u2019s posture with regards to countering global terrorism and our commitment to hold bad actors in Syria accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HTS was earlier known as Al Nusra Front and was formerly the branch of Al Qaeda in Syria. But it broke ties with the group in 2016 and sought to soften its image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States had initially announced in July its intent to delist Syria as a sponsor of terrorism, a move seen as a vote of confidence in Ahmed al-Sharaa.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON(National Times)- The United States on Monday delisted Syria as a state sponsor of terrorism, rescinding a decades-old designation that had severely impeded investment.
