{"id":131761,"date":"2026-08-24T10:38:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-24T05:38:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=131761"},"modified":"2026-08-24T10:38:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-24T05:38:32","slug":"cdf-munir-to-visit-tehran-on-monday-says-iranian-foreign-ministry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/131761\/","title":{"rendered":"CDF Munir to visit Tehran on Monday, says Iranian foreign ministry"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TEHRAN(National Times)- Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday to continue efforts to bring peace \u200band security to the region, Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil \u200cBaqaei said on Sunday, according to a statement by the ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said CDF Munir would lead an official delegation and the \u201cvisit aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation between Iran and Pakistan and to continue Pakistan\u2019s good offices in support of peace and security in the region\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the visit, CDF Munir would meet and hold talks with senior officials Iran, Baqaei added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The visit comes amid heightened tensions as \u200cIran threatens \u2060a military response to US plans for sanctions that could further put a strain on the Islamic republic\u2019s ailing economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will coincide with a Monday announcement on details related to the planned sanctions, which \u200bUS officials have \u200bsaid would be \u201cthe \u2060toughest sanctions in history\u201d on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump had warned of economic consequences against any country that provided \u201cany type \u200bof lifeline to Iran\u201d as he seeks to isolate \u200bthe \u2060Islamic republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oil shipments are at a virtual standstill in the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran threatening to strike any unauthorised oil tankers that \u2060try to \u200btransit the vital waterway, and Iran\u2019s \u200beconomy is already under immense pressure from sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pakistan\u2019s mediation<br>Pakistan has been leading mediation efforts between the two sides in the ongoing war, which began with US and \u200bIsraeli strikes on Iran in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than two months after the beginning of the war, Pakistan brokered a ceasefire between the two sides on April 8 and Islamabad hosted direct talks between US and Iran on April 11 and 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mediation efforts also led to the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 17 between the US and Iran in Geneva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MoU set a framework to move towards a permanent end to the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While hostilities have renewed between the two sides since, Pakistan remains engaged in mediation efforts, with CDF Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi having made multiple visits to Iran in recent months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TEHRAN(National Times)- Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday to continue efforts to bring peace \u200band security to the region, Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil \u200cBaqaei said on Sunday, according to a statement by the ministry.
