ISLAMABAD(National Times)- Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said on Friday that PTI founder Imran Khan underwent a medical check-up at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) before being shifted back to Adiala jail, adding that he was declared \u201cmedically fit\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The information minister\u2019s initial statement on the matter did not specifically name the hospital where Imran was taken. The SC\u2019s orders from earlier this week had directed the government to take Imran to Shifa International Hospital, which is a private institution. Media reports also said that Imran was taken to the private health facility amid tight security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, Tarar clarified that Imran was taken to Pims, a government-run facility where the PTI founder has undergone treatment for an eye ailment in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a post on X, the information minister said, \u201cIn the light of the Supreme Court\u2019s order, the prisoner was taken to the hospital under appropriate security arrangements during the night between August 20 and 21.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA team of qualified doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a cardiologist, and a physician, conducted a detailed examination of him and declared him medically fit,\u201d he said, adding that Imran\u2019s sister Uzma Khan was also present during the examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAfter the completion of this entire process, he was shifted back to Adiala jail on the morning of August 21 at approximately 5am,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a subsequent post, he said, \u201cThe medical examination was conducted at Pims in which doctors from Al Shifa Hospital were also present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIn light of the security situation created by PTI workers on the way to and outside Al Shifa Hospital, he was taken to Pims and according to the medical examination, was found healthy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He said that Imran had been provided medical treatment in the past and would continue to be provided them in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shifa International Hospital is located in Islamabad\u2019s Sector H-8, which also houses several educational institutes and other government offices. Visuals from outside the hospital on Thursday night showed that both Pitras Bukhari Road and Service Road South had been cordoned off, and a sizeable contingent of law enforcement personnel present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The last time such extraordinary security arrangements were witnessed in the vicinity was during the Panamagate proceedings against former PM Nawaz Sharif, which were held at the Federal Judicial Academy \u2014 located just a stone\u2019s throw from the hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Imran \u2014 imprisoned since Aug 5, 2023, for concealing details of Toshakhana gifts \u2014 is serving a 14-year sentence at Rawalpindi\u2019s Adiala jail in a \u00a3190 million corruption case, also known as the Al-Qadir Trust case. However, his health has deteriorated over the course of his prison sentence, prompting outcry from members of the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heightened security
There was tight security around Shifa International Hospital for Imran\u2019s visit on Thursday night. Security pickets were set up on roads leading to the hospital and around 800 personnel were deployed in and around the premises, following a security audit of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Islamabad police chief, Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, also visited the hospital twice to oversee preparations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a security order issued by the Islamabad Police and seen by Dawn, orders were given for deploying 800 personnel from various law enforcement branches in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The personnel were tasked with achieving four objectives: protecting the \u201clife, property and [the] dignity of citizens\u201d; ensuring \u201csecurity against terrorist acts\u201d; maintaining public order; and ensuring the smooth flow of traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Separately, the PTI had urged supporters to maintain their distance during the hospital visit. In a post on X, PTI Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram wrote, \u201cImran Khan sahab will, Insha\u2019Allah, be transferred to the hospital today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are fully aware of the sentiments of Imran Khan\u2019s supporters, who are eager to catch a glimpse of their leader.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, he requested that people maintain their distance from the hospital and help ensure the party founder\u2019s health and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
SC orders Imran\u2019s transfer to jail
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court directed the government to shift the jailed ex-premier to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad within the next two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Headed by Justice Shahid Waheed, a three-member SC bench, also comprising Justices Naeem Akhtar Afghan and Ishtiaq Ibrahim, issued the ruling on several petitions seeking Imran\u2019s hospitalisation as well as meetings with his family members in a packed courtroom No 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are mindful of the constitutional and legal obligation of the state, and consequently of the Supreme Court, to safeguard the life, health, dignity and security of persons in custody,\u201d said the order authored by Justice Waheed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA prisoner does not, by reason of his incarceration, cease to be entitled to humane treatment and necessary medical care,\u201d the order said, adding that, as an interim arrangement and without prejudice to the rights and contentions of the parties, the court was inclined to issue the directions, which would be complied with by the respondents, including the government, its officers and agencies, in letter and spirit until the next date of hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The court proceedings were also attended by the PTI founder\u2019s sisters, namely Aleema Khan, Noreen Niazi and Dr Uzma Khan, as well as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Also on Tuesday, Noreen was granted a meeting with Imran for the first time this year. Jail sources said that the two met in the jail\u2019s conference room, where they discussed his health and other issues. Noreen also informed the ex-premier about the SC\u2019s earlier order to have him taken to Shifa International Hospital for a medical checkup, they added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
