{"id":131600,"date":"2026-08-20T18:46:04","date_gmt":"2026-08-20T13:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=131600"},"modified":"2026-08-20T18:46:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T13:46:08","slug":"oldest-human-brain-cells-grown-in-lab-recorded-passage-of-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/131600\/","title":{"rendered":"Oldest human brain cells grown in lab \u2018recorded passage of time\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PARIS(National Times)- Peppercorn-sized clumps of human brain cells grown in a lab for a record seven years aged similarly to those inside our heads, suggesting they \u201crecorded the passage of time,\u201d scientists said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These tiny clumps called organoids are grown from stem cells by scientists around the world in the hopes of uncovering the mysteries of our brain \u2014 and to test new medicine without having to use animals such as mice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally these organoids live for a few months, meaning they can only offer a window into the earliest stages of human brains, which take nearly 20 years to fully develop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So a US-led team of researchers grew some for around seven years, making them the \u201coldest ever\u201d, Paola Arlotta, the senior author of a new study describing the experiment, said. They discovered that the brain organoids continued to change and mature over the years, despite never having been inside an embryo, let alone a body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe brain can continue to develop outside the context of a person for this unprecedented amount of time,\u201d explained Arlotta, a Harvard University professor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The scientists hope this will help shed light on how a range of disorders such as autism and schizophrenia first emerge and then progress later in life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study, published in the journal Nature, said the organoids \u201crecorded the passage of time and retain a memory of the developmental steps already performed\u201d. This does not mean organoids have memories like we tend to think of them \u2014 such as recalling something from childhood \u2014 but simply that their past is \u201cengraved\u201d on a cellular level, Arlotta emphasised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organoids are \u201cbiological models\u201d or \u201cavatars\u201d for human brain cells that are far less complex and do not receive sensory input, she added. Scientists widely agree that organoids are not capable of consciousness or other higher-order brain functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Experiment \u2018warped time\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers analysed their ageing organoids with three different kinds of recently developed genetic \u201cclocks\u201d that can roughly determine the biological age of cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They all showed that the organoids changed over time in similar ways to normal brain cells. To further confirm their theory, the scientists carried out what Arlotta described as a \u201ccrazy experiment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They mixed cells that had been developing for a year together with others that were only two weeks old, creating a \u201cchimera\u201d. The young cells behaved as normal. But the older cells \u201cjumped ahead a whole chunk of development\u201d and started making neurons that normally take around four months, Arlotta said. This effectively \u201cwarped time\u201d for brain development, which was \u201csuper cool\u201d, she added. In the future, it could be possible to use this technique to rapidly speed up the development of certain brain cells, Arlotta speculated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The previous record for the oldest grown brain organoids was a little under two years, according to the study. Unlike the brains inside our heads, these organoids do not have a body that can get sick and die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So could brain organoids grown and maintained in a lab hypothetically outlive humans? \u201cNobody rea\u00adlly knows,\u201d Arlotta said, adding she suspected organoids could hypothetically last a little longer.
