{"id":131444,"date":"2026-08-18T10:18:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-18T05:18:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=131444"},"modified":"2026-08-18T10:18:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T05:18:46","slug":"indonesian-mother-grateful-after-emergency-birth-during-quake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/131444\/","title":{"rendered":"Indonesian mother \u2018grateful\u2019 after emergency birth during quake"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NAGEKEO(National Times)- As the earth shook around her, tearing apart homes, buildings, and bridges in eastern Indonesia, Maria Florida Nogo Kelen was giving birth to her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 39-year-old went in for emergency surgery as a 7.7 earthquake and a series of aftershocks ravaged the East Nusa Tenggara province, the country\u2019s worst disaster since 2022, fighting off the tremors and her declining health to deliver her fourth child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the surgery, I was not afraid,\u201d Maria, who lives in the region of Nagekeo, close to the quake\u2019s epicentre, said. \u201cI had to be healthy for my kids.\u201d Her delivery came two months ahead of schedule due to a complicated pregnancy that posed risks for both Maria and her child, forcing doctors to use flashlights to perform the surgery during intermittent power outages as the hospital building shook mercilessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her doctors said Maria could have suffered from a fatal seizure had they delayed the birth. \u201cWe had no choice,\u201d said Maria\u2019s obstetrician, Yona Sara Pardede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs humans we were afraid &#8230; the surgery was difficult as she was a small baby. I ask God, please help us. We don\u2019t even have a ventilator.\u201d Finally, her daughter, Gempita, was born, named after the Indonesian word for earthquake: \u2018Gempa.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Saturday\u2019s disaster, the country\u2019s deadliest since a 2022 quake killed hundreds in West Java, has so far killed 54 people across the East Nusa Tenggara province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many medical professionals across Indonesia\u2019s southernmost province treated people with injuries outside in tents as the quake damaged hundreds of hospitals and homes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NAGEKEO(National Times)- As the earth shook around her, tearing apart homes, buildings, and bridges in eastern Indonesia, Maria Florida Nogo Kelen was giving birth to her daughter.
