LONDON(National Times)- A British funeral director was jailed for 20 years on Friday for deceiving families who had paid him to bury or cremate their relatives\u2019 bodies, giving some the ashes of other people in what police described as \u201cunthinkable\u201d crimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In one case, the parents of a stillborn baby were given the ashes of what experts said were of a young adult, while their child\u2019s body was found by police in a brown paper bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Prosecutors said Robert Bush, who ran Legacy Independent Funeral Directors in Hull, northern England, breached the trust of grieving families \u201con an almost industrial scale\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bush\u2019s deception was discovered in 2024 when, while he was on holiday, a casual worker told other funeral directors that bodies had been left for years, describing it as \u201ca horror scene\u201d, prosecutor Chris Paxton said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Police found 35 bodies on the site, with many uncovered and in varying states of decomposition having been \u201csimply abandoned … for nature to take its course\u201d, Paxton said. Only the relatives of those whose bodies were found there can be sure what happened to them, Judge Nicholas Hilliard said as he sentenced Bush, whom he described as \u201cheartless\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe awful truth is that anyone whose loved one went through Legacy at any time when it was operating can now have no confidence as to how they were treated or as to whose ashes they have,\u201d the judge added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Feeling \u2018violated\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Bush admitted in April to 30 counts of preventing a lawful and decent burial and theft, by stealing money families had donated to 12 charities, having previously pleaded guilty to more than 30 charges of fraud by false representation and fraudulent trading over nearly 12 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hilliard said Bush, 48, had \u201ccaused anguish and pain on a scale beyond comprehension … I don\u2019t think that I have ever known offences affect so many people and so many people so deeply\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During a week-long hearing at Hull Crown Court, dozens of statements were read by, or on behalf of the deceased\u2019s relatives. One woman, whose 94-year-old father\u2019s body was left at Legacy for almost a year, said she had taken some of the ashes Bush gave her and put them in lockets for her and her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI now feel violated that I have had some unknown person\u2019s ashes so close to me,\u201d she said in her statement. \u201cWhat happened at Legacy Funeral Directors is the unthinkable, and the details have shocked the entire country,\u201d Detective Superintendent Alan Curtis from Humberside Police said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The 48-year-old undertaker will serve at least half of his sentence before being eligible for parole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Police who searched his premises in 2024 after a tipoff found 31 bodies in a cold storage area that should have been cremated months earlier. They included a stillborn baby that had been there for almost two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Most of the bodies were \u201cuncovered and on racks … of a cold storage area\u201d, a prosecutor told Hull Crown Court, describing conditions on the premises as \u201cdreadful\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Police found more than 100 sets of ashes on the premises, and determined there were at least 46 cases where relatives had been given the wrong ashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Many families discovered they had been left with nothing of their loved ones\u2019 remains.
