{"id":130490,"date":"2026-08-01T11:31:23","date_gmt":"2026-08-01T06:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=130490"},"modified":"2026-08-01T11:31:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-01T06:31:25","slug":"sri-lanka-sentences-2-ex-security-officials-to-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/130490\/","title":{"rendered":"Sri Lanka sentences 2 ex-security officials to death"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">COLOMBO(National Times)- A Sri Lanka court sentenced two ex-security officials to death on Friday for failing to prevent the 2019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1477527\">Easter Sunday bombings<\/a>, which killed 279 people including 45 foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a majority decision, a three-judge bench ruled that former police chief Pujith Jayasundara and former defence ministry secretary Hemasiri Fernando failed in their duties to stop the deadly attacks, blamed on a homegrown extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jayasundara, 66, and Fernando, 76, can appeal against the sentence in the Supreme Court, but have been remanded to judicial custody until granted bail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sri Lanka has not carried out the death sentence since 1976, maintaining an unofficial moratorium on capital punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are at least 800 people on death row, according to government figures shared with parliament in February, with sentences usually commuted to life imprisonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday\u2019s judgement at the special fast-track court came after the state appealed against a 2022 decision that acquitted the duo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The court was told during the proceedings that an Indian intelligence agency had alerted Sri Lanka on April 4, 2019 to a possible suicide attack by extremists, but authorities failed to take action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The attacks on April 21 that year targeted three churches and three hotels. More than 500 people were wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fernando and Jayasundara were arrested in 2019 and held in custody for four months before being released on bail. Under a previous civil action, they had to pay 125 million rupees (an estimated $372,464) as damages to survivors of the attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors had earlier told the high court that \u201cnegligence\u201d by the two top officials amounted to \u201cgrave crimes against humanity\u201d and laid murder charges against them.
