(National Times)- US President Donald Trump lashed out at \u201cfake news media\u201d and talked about serving a banned third term as he addressed a rescheduled White House Correspondents\u2019 Dinner on Friday, three months after an\u00a0assassination attempt<\/a>\u00a0disrupted the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis place is really the largest group of Trump derangement syndrome people ever put together at one time,\u201d Trump told the media gala at the Waldorf Astoria hotel in Washington, DC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 80-year-old started with a relatively conciliatory tone, reflecting on the attack by a gunman that forced him to be evacuated from the dinner in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe show must go on,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he quickly pivoted to attacking a wide range of perceived enemies in an often rambling speech, starting with journalists before training his fire on Democratic opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump had earlier thrown up his hands and laughed as he shook hands with a Wall Street Journal<\/em> team that broke stories on his ties to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he later joked that \u201cthis has not been an easy evening, all these awards,\u201d Trump said after journalists received prizes for their reporting on the Republican\u2019s second presidency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also revived talk about serving a third term, which is barred under the US Constitution, even as he insisted he was joking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cJust like my presidency, the second time is always better. And the third time is better yet,\u201d Trump said, before adding: \u201cI\u2019m only kidding.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He later doubled down, pulling out a red \u201cTrump 2028\u201d cap and saying he was \u201cpleased to announce my intention to \u2014 and this is a somewhat of a scoop \u2014 my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much of Trump\u2019s speech seemed to recycle his campaign-style rallies, with the president even jokingly lambasting his speechwriters when some lines fell flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he ended the hour-long speech by saying he had \u201ctremendous respect\u201d for the journalists in the room \u2014 while adding: \u201cWhen I\u2019m gone you\u2019re all going to be broke.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Bad blood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trump, who was attending his first<\/a> White House Correspondents Dinner after years of bad blood with the press, added that he planned to come next year too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He returned amid heightened security on Friday, three months after an alleged assassination attempt<\/a> forced his chaotic evacuation from the event after gunshots were fired at the Washington Hilton and the black-tie dinner was called off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time the US Secret Service took no chances. Police and National Guard officers sealed off nearby roads and threw up a major security cordon, although guests passing through faced only a cursory check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The venue was changed from the Hilton to the Waldorf Astoria, a former Trump hotel, meaning the gala will be much smaller and \u201cmore intimate,\u201d according to organisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet\u2019s try this again,\u201d said CBS<\/em> correspondent Weijia Jiang, the outgoing president of the White House Correspondents\u2019 Association, who presided over the previous dinner. \u201cTonight our message is this: We are back. We will not be intimidated. We will not let an act of violence have the final word.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Incoming WHCA president Jacqui Heinrich said the event would return to the Washington Hilton next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>\u2018Threat picture\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

US Secret Service Director Sean Curran was spotted standing in the entrance hall watching guests arrive, an AFP<\/em> reporter saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guests waited in a long line to show a QR code and their ID on the way into the atrium where the dinner was held.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curran, the head of the Secret Service, defended security at the original event, telling reporters \u201cit did work, the system worked.\u201d He insisted a cordon had prevented the alleged attacker from reaching the main hall in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Curran, who was at Trump\u2019s side when an assassin\u2019s bullet hit the Republican\u2019s ear at an election rally in 2024, said that current threats against top US officials were \u201coff the charts\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
