{"id":130014,"date":"2026-07-25T10:31:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-25T05:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=130014"},"modified":"2026-07-25T10:31:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-25T05:31:26","slug":"icc-members-vote-to-dismiss-karim-khan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/130014\/","title":{"rendered":"ICC members vote to dismiss Karim Khan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE HAGUE(National Times)- Member states of the International Criminal Court voted on Friday to dismiss Karim Khan as prosecutor following allegations of sexual misconduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eighty-two of the court\u2019s 125 member states voted in favour of the prosecutor\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khan, 56, denies any wrongdoing and his lawyer said he will challenge his dismissal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMr Khan will challenge the lawfulness and fairness of the decision through all available legal mechanisms,\u201d lawyer Tayab Ali wrote on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khan\u2019s dismissal follows an announcement by the United States that it will launch a renewed diplomatic campaign to dismantle the ICC, which it says is a threat to its sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Diplomats running the court\u2019s oversight body decided last month that the British barrister had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a junior ICC lawyer and should be fired. Member states largely followed that conclusion in a vote at the United Nations in New York on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a visit to the Philippines on Thursday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said there were \u201clunatics and crazies involved in the ICC\u201d and there was no way any US political or military officials would ever go on trial at the court, reiterating previous criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US, which is not a member, has imposed sanctions on 11 ICC judges and prosecutors, including Khan, citing the ICC\u2019s arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and a past probe into US troops in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khan\u2019s accuser spoke publicly for the first time last week in an interview with CNN in which she repeated her allegations that the prosecutor had a non-consensual sexual relationship with her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Khan\u2019s dismissal immediately triggers the election process for a new ICC prosecutor who is not expected to be voted in before next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any active ICC warrants will remain in place even after Karim Khan\u2019s dismissal because only ICC judges have the authority to withdraw warrants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE HAGUE(National Times)- Member states of the International Criminal Court voted on Friday to dismiss Karim Khan as prosecutor following allegations of sexual misconduct.
