ISLAMABAD(National Times)- Pakistan on Thursday doubled down on its warning to Yemen\u2019s Houthi rebels, describing any\u00a0attack\u00a0<\/a>on its maritime interests as a \u201cred line\u201d and declaring that such a strike would be treated as an attack on the country, while simultaneously reassuring Saudi Arabia of its support and pledging to work with Riyadh to ensure the uninterrupted flow of ships through the Bab el-Mandab chokepoint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At his weekly media briefing, Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi left little room for ambiguity about Islamabad\u2019s position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do not think that there is a thin line when it comes to defending our national security and our assets. This is not a thin line; this is a red line. This red line is strictly within the context of our own national security,\u201d he said, adding that any attack against Pakistani flagged vessels or commercial ships belonging to the country \u201cwill be treated as an attack against Pakistan and will be met with a swift response in the exercise of our right to self-defence\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the determination of what constituted a threat or an attack would remain a technical assessment to be made by Pakistan\u2019s armed forces, which would remain vigilant in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spokesperson further reaffirmed that Islamabad remained fully committed to all bilateral agreements with Saudi Arabia, including a mutual defence arrangement that had been duly concluded and ratified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan had last year signed<\/a> a defence pact with Saudi Arabia, according to which any attack against one country will be considered aggression against both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The remarks came hours after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif spoke<\/a> by telephone with Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed Bin Salman, during which he condemned in the strongest terms the Houthi attacks on Saudi oil tankers in the Red Sea, describing them as unacceptable, a violation of international law and a threat to freedom of navigation, commercial shipping and regional peace and stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prime minister reiterated Pakistan\u2019s unwavering support for the Kingdom\u2019s security, sovereignty, territorial integrity and prosperity, and assured the crown prince that Islamabad would continue working closely with Saudi Arabia and the international community in support of peace, security and the uninterrupted flow of lawful maritime commerce through the Red Sea, the Strait of Hormuz and adjoining waters, according to a statement issued by PM Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan\u2019s latest warning follows FO\u2019s condemnation<\/a> a day earlier of Houthi threats against Saudi Arabia and commercial shipping after the group announced on July 20 an immediate maritime embargo against the Kingdom, portraying the move as retaliation for what it called the longstanding Saudi led siege of Houthi controlled ports and airports and a recent strike on Sana\u2019a airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De-escalation in Mideast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foreign Office spokesperson also indicated that Pakistan remained committed to efforts aimed at de-escalating the conflict in the Gulf despite the setbacks suffered by the peace process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrabi said Islamabad had not abandoned hope that the two sides could eventually return to negotiations even as military operations continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPakistan has been advocating for peace and the necessity of giving peace a chance through diplomacy and dialogue. We believe that the best template to revert to the peace process remains the Islamabad MoU<\/a> and the Joint Statement between Pakistan and Qatar, which offers a roadmap for implementing this peace process,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His remarks came as Pakistan continued consultations with key regional countries involved in mediation efforts. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar met<\/a> Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Al Busaidi on the sidelines of the Asean Regional Forum in Manila, where the two leaders reviewed the latest regional and international developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to FO, the two ministers expressed concern over the recent deterioration in the security situation, underscored the importance of preserving the ceasefire, respecting international law and working towards lasting peace and stability in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have not lost hope. We had not lost hope in the darkest days of this conflict cycle, when escalations mounted and there were armed attacks back and forth. Even then, we were not discouraged. We remain hopeful, however grim the situation may be on the ground. It is with the same degree of optimism that we will carry forward our advocacy for dialogue and diplomacy,\u201d Andrabi added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GSP+ report and Amnesty claims<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The FO spokesperson, meanwhile, expressed disappointment<\/a> with the European Union\u2019s latest assessment of Generalised Scheme of Preferences implementation, saying the report did not present a sufficiently balanced picture of the country\u2019s progress despite acknowledging legislative reforms and continued compliance with the program\u2019s international conventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNevertheless, I would be remiss if I did not express disappointment with the assessment, as the report\u2019s overall narrative does not present a sufficiently balanced picture of Pakistan\u2019s performance. It understates the breadth of reforms undertaken since Pakistan joined GSP Plus in 2014 and places disproportionate emphasis on the lower-than-desirable level of progress in certain areas,\u201d Andrabi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He reaffirmed that GSP+ remained central to Pakistan\u2019s economic relationship with EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The report had noted \u201cissues\u201d in Pakistan\u2019s compliance with its GSP+ commitments and warned that Islamabad would have to address those shortcomings to qualify under the revised GSP framework, due to take effect from Jan 1, 2027.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the report acknowledged legislative progress, including measures relating to anti-torture rules, minority rights and labour standards, it said Pakistan had regressed in several areas, citing concerns over enforced disappearances, freedom of expression, judicial independence, minority rights and implementation of labour protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Foreign Office also rejected an Amnesty International report<\/a> that called for investigation into Pakistan\u2019s airstrike on Kabul in March, dismissing the allegations as unsubstantiated and urging the rights organisation and the wider international community to instead focus on what it described as the Afghan Taliban\u2019s continued patronage of terrorist groups operating from Afghan territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrabi said the allegations levelled by Amnesty lacked credible evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He further urged the international community to hold the Afghan Taliban accountable for failing to fulfil its obligations under relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, the Doha Agreement<\/a> and other commitments to prevent Afghan territory from being used for cross border terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
