{"id":129791,"date":"2026-07-22T10:09:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-22T05:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=129791"},"modified":"2026-07-22T10:09:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-22T05:09:28","slug":"he-is-a-war-criminal-mamdani-says-ny-cannot-arrest-netanyahu-on-icc-warrant-urges-us-federal-officials-to-step-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/129791\/","title":{"rendered":"He is a war criminal&#8217;: Mamdani says NY cannot arrest Netanyahu on ICC warrant, urges US federal officials to step in"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web desk(National Times)- New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Tuesday his office does not have the authority to carry out the International Criminal Court\u2019s (ICC)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1874034\">arrest warrant<\/a>\u00a0for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and called on US federal officials to step in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBenjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,\u201d Mamdani said in a brief video message posted to social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy administration has reviewed every avenue available under applicable law to determine whether New York City could execute the ICC\u2019s arrest warrant if Benjamin Netanyahu came here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant. The federal government, however, does, and I call on them to join the ICC and execute this warrant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hague-based International Criminal Court said in 2024 that it had reasonable grounds to believe Netanyahu was responsible for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity related to Israel\u2019s offensive in Gaza following the October 7, 2023 attack by Hamas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US President Donald Trump on Monday&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2017066\">vowed&nbsp;<\/a>the Israeli Prime Minister would not face arrest if he attended September\u2019s United Nations General Assembly summit in New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the video, Mamdani said \u201canyone \u2014 with their eyes, with their heart, with their conscience \u2014 should recognise the devastation he has wrought and understand that he belongs before a court of law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs I\u2019ve said, I agree with the ICC that Benjamin Netanyahu should be arrested and tried for his crimes, as I do for anyone else charged by the ICC,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Netanyahu\u2019s office has dismissed Mamdani\u2019s stance and said the ICC is a kangaroo court.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web desk(National Times)- New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Tuesday his office does not have the authority to carry out the International Criminal Court\u2019s (ICC)\u00a0arrest warrant\u00a0for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and called on US federal officials to step in. \u201cBenjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":129792,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-129791","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest_news","entry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.0 -
