{"id":129070,"date":"2026-07-09T18:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-09T13:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=129070"},"modified":"2026-07-09T18:04:13","modified_gmt":"2026-07-09T13:04:13","slug":"man-awarded-death-sentence-for-2019-killing-of-anchorperson-mureed-abbas-in-karachi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/129070\/","title":{"rendered":"Man awarded death sentence for 2019 killing of anchorperson Mureed Abbas in Karachi"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KARACHI(National Times)- A sessions court sentenced a man to death on Thursday in a case pertaining to the 2019 murder of TV anchor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1493055\">Mureed Abbas<\/a>\u00a0and his friend over a monetary dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime suspect Atif Zaman and his brother, Adil Zaman, were arrested and booked by the police for killing Abbas and Khizer Hayat, who were the business partners of the prime suspect, in Karachi\u2019s Khayaban-i-Bukhari area on the night of July 9, 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Daniyal Muhammad Hussain \u2014 a part of the legal team that represented the complainant, Abbas\u2019s wife, alongside Advocate Jibran Nasir \u2014 said that Adil Zaman had been declared an absconder in the case after escaping following the cancellation of his bail by the Supreme Court\u2019s Karachi registry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Atif was sentenced to death on two counts of murder by the court on Thursday, while Adil\u2019s case file remains dormant until he is arrested or appears before the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abbas was a&nbsp;<em>Bol News<\/em>&nbsp;anchorperson. In the incident \u2014 which at the time was said by the police to be a \u201cpersonal dispute\u201d \u2014 he was gunned down while Hayat also received multiple bullet wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hayat was shifted to a private hospital but succumbed to his wounds, according to the police.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In October 2019, the case was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1508269\">transferred<\/a>&nbsp;from an anti-terrorism court to a sessions court, with the former ruling that the offence did not fell within its ambit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KARACHI(National Times)- A sessions court sentenced a man to death on Thursday in a case pertaining to the 2019 murder of TV anchor\u00a0Mureed Abbas\u00a0and his friend over a monetary dispute.
