{"id":128341,"date":"2026-06-27T10:51:22","date_gmt":"2026-06-27T05:51:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=128341"},"modified":"2026-06-27T10:51:24","modified_gmt":"2026-06-27T05:51:24","slug":"us-allows-anthropic-to-release-mythos-ai-to-trusted-organisations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/128341\/","title":{"rendered":"US allows Anthropic to release Mythos AI to &#8216;trusted&#8217; organisations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web desk(National Times)- Anthropic said on Friday that the US government has allowed it to release its powerful Claude Mythos 5 artifical intelligence (AI) model to some \u201ctrusted\u201d US organisations, partially reversing an order two weeks ago to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2007564\">suspend<\/a>\u00a0access over national security risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 100 companies and institutions will now have access to Mythos 5, including many Fortune 500 companies, a source familiar with the new directive said, declining to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concern that powerful AI systems could be misused by military intelligence users in China, Russia or other countries of concern has prompted US President Donald Trump\u2019s administration to take an aggressive approach to oversight of releases of Anthropic\u2019s and rival OpenAI\u2019s frontier models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI said earlier in the day that it was delaying a full public launch of GPT-5.6 at the US government\u2019s request, limiting its access to a small group of vetted partners whose details were shared with the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic had abruptly disabled its most advanced AI models Mythos 5 and Fable 5 for all users after the government\u2019s June 12 export control order.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cToday, the government notified us that Mythos 5, our strongest cybersecurity model, can be redeployed to a set of US organisations that operate and defend critical infrastructure,\u201d Anthropic said in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re restoring access for these organizations quickly, and we\u2019re continuing to work with the government to expand access to Mythos 5 and make Fable 5 available for general use again,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2011100\/us-allows-anthropic-to-release-mythos-ai-to-trusted-organisations#government-criticised-for-picking-who-gets-access\"><\/a>Government criticised for picking who gets access<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government\u2019s vetting of which companies can gain access to Mythos has drawn much criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one knows how these companies are picked and why everyone else is excluded,\u201d said John Coleman, legislative counsel for the Philadelphia-based nonpartisan free speech organisation, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is putting too much power in the hands of the government. There\u2019s little transparency and it raises questions about the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI boss Sam Altman echoed concerns about the government\u2019s choosing of who gets access to top models in a post on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Extensive safety testing \u201cis not a bad idea. I just don\u2019t like the idea of the government picking the customers,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experts have said that Mythos models, in the wrong hands, could dramatically accelerate sophisticated cyberattacks, particularly in sectors such as banking that rely on complex, interconnected, and often decades-old technology systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A letter from USCommerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to Anthropic&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2008285\">said&nbsp;<\/a>there had been \u201csignificant progress\u201d in work done by the company with the government to address \u201crisks associated with the Covered Models\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not immediately clear what safeguards had been adopted. Anthropic said earlier this month that it understood the government believed there is a method of bypassing, or \u201cjailbreaking,\u201d a safeguard that would prevent Fable 5 from being used in identifying software vulnerabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2011100\/us-allows-anthropic-to-release-mythos-ai-to-trusted-organisations#no-export-licence-needed-for-non-us-citizens\"><\/a>No export licence needed for non-US citizens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lutnick said in the letter that an export license will no longer be needed for Mythos 5 to trusted companies and their employees who are not US citizens, or to Anthropic\u2019s employees who are not US citizens, but licensing restrictions will remain in place for companies that are not on the approved list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The source said many of the approved companies are part of Anthropic\u2019s Project Glasswing, which includes about 100 well-known tech companies and institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government is also moving towards allowing Anthropic to release Fable soon, although a timeline is unclear, the source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Fable 5 and Mythos use the same underlying AI model, but Fable 5 is designed to be widely available for public use whereas some safeguards are lifted for Mythos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both Anthropic and OpenAI plan to go public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anthropic\u2019s relationship with the US government has, however, been particularly rocky. The company refused to allow the US military to use its AI models for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons systems and the government retaliated by putting it on a national security blacklist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government\u2019s restrictions on Anthropic and OpenAI follow Trump\u2019s signing of an executive order this month establishing a voluntary framework for AI developers to offer \u201ccovered frontier models\u201d to the US government for up to 30 days before releasing them to trusted partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The administration\u2019s latest order is \u201ca practical interim step, but leaves unresolved the larger issue of how companies can widely release updated models,\u201d said Kate Koren, an analyst at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington and a former Commerce Department official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe longer there isn\u2019t a system in place that will allow US companies to widely release new models, the more likely it is that China will be able to catch up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web desk(National Times)- Anthropic said on Friday that the US government has allowed it to release its powerful Claude Mythos 5 artifical intelligence (AI) model to some \u201ctrusted\u201d US organisations, partially reversing an order two weeks ago to\u00a0suspend\u00a0access over national security risks.
