{"id":128156,"date":"2026-06-23T22:14:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-23T17:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=128156"},"modified":"2026-06-23T22:14:01","modified_gmt":"2026-06-23T17:14:01","slug":"kgtl-plans-up-to-100m-more-investment-in-karachi-port-after-cargo-surge-from-iran-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/128156\/","title":{"rendered":"KGTL plans up to $100m more investment in Karachi port after cargo surge from Iran war"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karachi(National Times)- The Karachi Gateway Terminal Ltd (KGTL) is planning up to $100 million in new investment within five years as Pakistan tries to cut freight costs and turn a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2009363\">cargo surge<\/a>\u00a0triggered by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/live\/iran-israel-war\">Iran war<\/a>\u00a0into longer-term regional shipping gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KGTL, backed by Abu Dhabi Ports Group, has already completed a $60m dredging project at Karachi Port and is expanding container and bulk-handling facilities, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Khurram Aziz Khan told&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;in an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are targeting another $75 million to $100 million\u201d within five years, Khan said, adding that the next phase would focus on expanding the container terminal, enhancing yard capacity, larger ship and yard cranes, dedicated bulk export infrastructure, silos, warehouses and automated conveying.Khurram Aziz Khan, CEO of Karachi Gateway Terminal Limited (KGTL) and Karachi Gateway Terminal Multipurpose Limited (KGTML), speaks during a Reuters interview in Karachi on June 23, 2026. \u2014 Reuters<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KGTL is also exploring investment in rail freight, including locomotives, rolling stock and storage hubs near agricultural areas, to link those areas to ports and help Pakistan export products such as corn and rice more competitively, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor transit as well, you need to provide a complete solution,\u201d Khan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are ready to invest in that as well, to bring our own rolling stock and locomotive for the freight trains business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2010285\/kgtl-plans-up-to-100m-more-investment-in-karachi-port-after-cargo-surge-from-iran-war#disruption-in-traffic\"><\/a>Disruption in traffic<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1983411\">disruption<\/a>&nbsp;in maritime traffic due to the US-Israel war on Iran created a new opportunity for Pakistan to act as a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1996852\">transshipment hub<\/a>, as cargo was rerouted through Karachi for onward shipment to other destinations during the conflict, Khan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPakistan has never really handled transshipment volume,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis conflict has created this opportunity for Pakistan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1983607\">dredging project<\/a>&nbsp;is expected to allow Karachi Port to handle bulk vessels of up to 120,000 metric tonnes, from about 60,000 tonnes previously, once Karachi Port Trust (KPT) issues revised handling parameters expected within days, Khan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">KGTL is upgrading its bulk terminal to cut handling time for a 60,000-tonne vessel to about 2.5 to 3 days from 12 to 15 days, while building silos with annual capacity of 8.5m tonnes for clean bulk cargo to secure national food security, bulk-export warehouses and systems for fertiliser imports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sustaining the gains will depend on better road and rail links, the KGTL CEO said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Karachi(National Times)- The Karachi Gateway Terminal Ltd (KGTL) is planning up to $100 million in new investment within five years as Pakistan tries to cut freight costs and turn a\u00a0cargo surge\u00a0triggered by the\u00a0Iran war\u00a0into longer-term regional shipping gains.
