{"id":127794,"date":"2026-06-17T20:37:42","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T15:37:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=127794"},"modified":"2026-06-17T20:37:47","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T15:37:47","slug":"telegram-challenging-indian-government-order-that-temporarily-blocks-its-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/127794\/","title":{"rendered":"Telegram challenging Indian government order that temporarily blocks its use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web desk(National Times)- Messaging app Telegram has filed a petition in a New Delhi court challenging an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2008345\">Indian government order<\/a>\u00a0that has temporarily blocked use of the platform in an effort to prevent exam fraud, a legal news website reported on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The extraordinary order blocking the app came into effect on Tuesday in an attempt to curb fraud channels claiming to have the question paper in advance, but has generated divided opinions on such blanket bans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision comes ahead of a retest of a nationwide medical college entrance examination, after a scandal last month over a question paper leak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawyers for Telegram mentioned their challenge before a judge at the Delhi High Court on Wednesday, who then agreed to take up Telegram\u2019s petition shortly, local media reports said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telegram did not immediately respond to a&nbsp;<em>Reuters<\/em>&nbsp;request for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Telegram\u2019s founder Pavel Durov on Wednesday questioned the effectiveness of the ban in stopping leaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said it is a punishment for Telegram\u2019s 150 million Indian viewers and \u201cnot the insiders who leaked the exam materials\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, the Indian government cancelled a key undergraduate entrance exam for medical colleges after authorities said they were investigating allegations that its questions had been leaked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The alleged question paper leak of the medical entrance exam, which is taken by 2.3 million students, led to protests in various parts of India and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2005616\">demands for the resignation<\/a>&nbsp;of Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The restriction on Telegram was issued under an Indian IT law provision that allows the government to block access to internet apps in the \u201cinterest of sovereignty and integrity of India\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web desk(National Times)- Messaging app Telegram has filed a petition in a New Delhi court challenging an\u00a0Indian government order\u00a0that has temporarily blocked use of the platform in an effort to prevent exam fraud, a legal news website reported on Wednesday.
