{"id":127747,"date":"2026-06-17T11:08:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-17T06:08:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=127747"},"modified":"2026-06-17T11:08:29","modified_gmt":"2026-06-17T06:08:29","slug":"elon-musks-ai-tool-grok-was-used-in-strikes-against-iran-us-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/127747\/","title":{"rendered":"Elon Musk&#8217;s AI tool Grok was used in strikes against Iran: US govt"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web Desk(National Times)- Elon Musk\u2019s artificial intelligence tool Grok was used in strikes against Iran, the United States government revealed in a legal briefing seen Tuesday by\u00a0<em>AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The June 15 brief defends the gas turbines used by a giant data centre belonging to the trillionaire\u2019s company xAI, which are the target of an environmental lawsuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the brief, the US Department of Justice argued that the lawsuit \u201cthreatens American national, economic, and energy security by seeking to shut off the power supply for artificial intelligence innovation that supports the Department of War\u2019s military operations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To support the argument, federal prosecutors presented testimony from Pentagon AI chief Cameron Stanley in which he states, under oath, that Grok is already in use within&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1988898\">Project Maven<\/a>, the US military\u2019s AI-assisted targeting programme that was initially powered by Anthropic\u2019s Claude model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project\u2019s Maven Smart Systems (MSS) \u201cenabled US forces to deploy over 2,000 munitions to 2,000 distinct targets within 96 hours during&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2005038\">Operation Epic Fury<\/a>,\u201d Stanley\u2019s statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stanley praised Musk\u2019s technology and \u201cthe greatly increased operational efficiency made possible by the Grok Gov Model\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NAACP, a civil rights organisation defending Black Americans\u2019 rights, is suing xAI and accusing it of operating dozens of turbines without permits in violation of the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/laws-regulations\/summary-clean-air-act\">Clean Air Act.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rights group says they pollute majority Black neighborhoods, but xAI says the turbines are temporary and mobile, and therefore not subject to regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of February, the government<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cn48jj3y8ezo\">&nbsp;terminated<\/a>&nbsp;its contracts with Anthropic after it refused to allow its tools to be used for fully automated strikes or the mass surveillance of Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon then&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1996692\">turned<\/a>&nbsp;to Anthropic\u2019s competitors, like Google, OpenAI and xAI, to continue its pursuit of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Google, more than 600 employees demanded the company not provide AI to the military for classified operations. Others have raised broad concerns about AI\u2019s threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The US military\u2019s transition to AI is taking time, and in March the government had to acknowledge that Claude was still being used for the war in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A close ally of President Donald Trump, Musk&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2007278\">folded<\/a>&nbsp;xAI into his space exploration company SpaceX in February, which carried out the largest IPO in history on June 12.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web Desk(National Times)- Elon Musk\u2019s artificial intelligence tool Grok was used in strikes against Iran, the United States government revealed in a legal briefing seen Tuesday by\u00a0AFP.
