{"id":127583,"date":"2026-06-13T20:47:24","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=127583"},"modified":"2026-06-13T20:47:26","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:47:26","slug":"five-dead-after-indian-air-force-transport-plane-crashes-in-remote-northeast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/127583\/","title":{"rendered":"Five dead after Indian Air Force transport plane crashes in remote northeast"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web desk(National Times)- Five Indian air force personnel were killed when a Russian-made Indian military plane crashed while landing at a base in the country\u2019s remote northeast on Saturday, the military said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Indian Air Force deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 accident at Jorhat\u201d, a city in Assam state, the air force said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, an air force official, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to brief the media, told&nbsp;<em>AFP<\/em>&nbsp;the co-pilot had survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">News channel&nbsp;<em>NDTV<\/em>&nbsp;broadcast images of the crash site, showing a thick black plume of smoke and the aircraft apparently broken into pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The air force said it \u201cextends its deepest condolences to the bereaved families and stands firmly with them in this hour of grief\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It said earlier that the Russian-made Antonov An-32 was on a \u201croutine sortie\u201d when it crashed as it came in to land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA court of inquiry is being constituted, to ascertain the cause of the accident,\u201d the air force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The An-32, a twin-engine turboprop, is specially designed to perform well at high altitudes and in extreme climates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Indian air force operates about 100 of them for ferrying military supplies and civilian aid in the country\u2019s remotest mountain areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, an Indian fighter jet, which was on a training mission,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1978801\">crashed<\/a>&nbsp;in the northeast Indian state of Assam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Su-30MKI which was on a training mission, crashed in the area of Karbi Anglong, Assam, approximately 60km from Jorhat,\u201d the IAF said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in February, the IAF&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1975189\">lost another<\/a>&nbsp;Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Tejas light combat aircraft after it overshot the runway at a frontline airbase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was reported to be the third Tejas aircraft lost since induction.
