{"id":126950,"date":"2026-06-03T22:41:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-03T17:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=126950"},"modified":"2026-06-03T22:41:16","modified_gmt":"2026-06-03T17:41:16","slug":"uk-allows-websites-to-opt-out-of-google-ai-search","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/126950\/","title":{"rendered":"UK allows websites to opt out of Google AI search"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Web desk(National Times)- Britain\u2019s competition watchdog said on Wednesday that it had ordered Google to allow website owners in the United Kingdom to opt out of having their content used by the US technology giant\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1937527\/google-rolls-out-ai-powered-search-in-pakistan\">AI search<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) called the change a \u201cworld first\u201d after it had proposed the measure in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Website publishers, particularly media outlets, claim that artificial intelligence (AI) models take their content without compensation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also argue that the AI-generated summaries discourage clicks to publishers\u2019 original pages, reducing traffic to their sites and in turn cutting their advertising revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google said on Wednesday that sites opting out would not receive traffic or impressions from its generative AI features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response to the opt-out ruling, Google said that \u201cToday, we\u2019re beginning to test a new control that lets website owners manage how their links and content appear in generative AI search features\u201d, its Search Ecosystem general manager, Mrinalini Loew, said in a&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products-and-platforms\/products\/search\/new-controls-website-owners\/\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CMA said the ruling \u201cwill secure a fairer deal for publishers and consumers\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It added that Google is \u201crequired to make sure that publisher content is properly attributed, using clear links, in AI-generated search results\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CMA last year designated Google with \u201cstrategic market status\u201d, subjecting it to tougher regulation alongside other technology giants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith features like [Google\u2019s] AI Overviews rapidly reshaping online search, it is crucial that content publishers, including news organisations, have appropriate bargaining power over how their content is used,\u201d CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI Overviews currently have more than 2.5 billion monthly users, according to Google, which last month showed off plans to turn its traditional search bar into an AI assistant.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web desk(National Times)- Britain\u2019s competition watchdog said on Wednesday that it had ordered Google to allow website owners in the United Kingdom to opt out of having their content used by the US technology giant\u2019s\u00a0AI search.
