Web desk(National Times)- Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday hailed United States President Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cextraordinary efforts to pursue peace\u201d, saying the latter held a \u201cvery useful and productive call\u201d with multiple countries\u2019 representatives, including Chief of Defence Forces and army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump held a phone call on Saturday with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan and Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The leaders encouraged Trump to agree to the emerging framework, Axios<\/em> reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he had a \u201cvery good call\u201d with Saudi Arabia\u2019s crown prince; the presidents of the UAE, Turkiye and Egypt; Qatar\u2019s emir, prime minister and a minister<\/a> who is part of the Board of Peace; and the kings of Jordan and Bahrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also went \u201cvery well\u201d, Trump noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Subsequently, in a post on X, PM Shehbaz said CDF Munir represented Pakistan in the call with Trump, appreciating the field marshal\u2019s \u201ctireless efforts during the entire process\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region,\u201d the premier said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPakistan will continue its peace efforts with utmost sincerity and we hope to host the next round of talks very soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan is continuing its efforts to revive the stalled Iran-US peace process after plans<\/a> for a second round of negotiations in Islamabad fell through<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first round of historic direct US-Iran talks<\/u><\/a> was held in Islamabad on April 11 and 12, following a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire on April 8. It had ended without an agreement, but also without a breakdown<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump later called off<\/a> a planned visit by US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner to Islamabad for a second round of talks with Iran. However, he extended<\/a> the ceasefire indefinitely \u201cupon the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest round of contacts is taking place under heightened pressure from the US and its Middle East allies. Trump on Wednesday said<\/a> talks in Iran were in the final stages, and also threatened to resume strikes if a deal is not reached in a \u201climited timeframe\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, this weekend, he said<\/a> that a \u200cmemorandum of understanding on a peace deal \u200bhad been \u201clargely negotiated\u201d \u200bwith Iran and would \u2060open the Strait \u200bof Hormuz, with details \u200bto be unveiled soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pakistan has stepped up<\/a> its diplomatic efforts to break the deadlock in the US-Iran negotiations, with CDF Munir concluding<\/a> a high-level visit to Tehran on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Tehran, he conducted intensive negotiations with the Iranian leadership that resulted in \u201cencouraging progress towards a final understanding\u201d, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commented<\/a> about CDF Munir\u2019s visit, saying that the US was in \u201cconstant communication with him [and] the highest levels of our government are constantly talking to him\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also praised Pakistan for doing an \u201cadmirable job\u201d trying to mediate a peace deal between Washington and Tehran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi also made his second<\/u><\/a> visit to Iran in less than a week to resuscitate negotiations. The minister had previously met<\/u><\/a> Iran\u2019s president, parliament speaker and foreign minister over the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visits came at a time when negotiations appeared to have moved beyond political signalling into detailed bargaining over a narrow interim framework dealing with the Strait of Hormuz, Iran\u2019s nuclear programme, sanctions relief and guarantees against renewed military action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
