A brilliant scholar who topped Pakistan\u2019s Central Superior Services (CSS) examination in 1952, he joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan and went on to serve the nation with distinction for nearly four decades.<br>During his remarkable diplomatic career spanning thirty-seven years, Mehdi Masud held several prestigious assignments, serving as Pakistan\u2019s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Kuwait, and Jordan. His diplomatic journey also included key postings in Washington, Tehran, Colombo, New Delhi, and at the United Nations. Notably, he was among the rare Pakistani diplomats to have served across multiple missions in India, including New Delhi and Calcutta.<br>As Pakistan\u2019s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg, and NATO from October 1984 to March 1988, Mehdi Masud played an important role in strengthening Pakistan\u2019s engagement with Europe during a period marked by significant geopolitical developments and evolving international relations.<br>A defining moment of his tenure in Brussels was the official visit of then Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo in April 1987. The high-profile visit included engagements with the European Economic Community (EEC) and high-level discussions with Jacques Delors, further enhancing Pakistan\u2019s diplomatic and economic relations with Europe.<br>Beyond his diplomatic achievements, Mehdi Masud remained deeply engaged in intellectual and public policy discourse. He authored numerous articles on foreign affairs and governance, delivered lectures at academic and strategic institutions, and continued contributing to national policy discussions after retirement through think tanks and advisory roles.<br>Mehdi Masud belonged to a generation of diplomats who regarded public service as a lifelong responsibility. His distinguished career, intellectual contributions, and unwavering commitment to Pakistan continue to inspire future generations of diplomats, scholars, and public servants.<br>Some careers are remembered for the positions held; others for the enduring legacy they leave behind.
