facing pressure<\/a> \u201cto take names\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\nSpeaking on the floor of the National Assembly on Wednesday, Ashraf recalled the video in which he was purportedly named.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHowever, after 30 minutes, her lawyers, in a separate clip, explained that she was being pressured to take my name,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PPP leader expressed surprise at having any association with the alleged drug dealer, saying, \u201cWhen I heard the name, I thought perhaps it is a different Raja Pervez Ashraf.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSoon after the video, people started commenting on the incident on social media and making vlogs about it,\u201d Ashraf said, expressing gratitude to his \u201cfamily, party leaders, and the political opposition\u201d, who he said came to defend and vouch for his character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have led a spotless life. I have served as a former prime minister and former NA speaker,\u201d he said. He added that the suspect had also taken the name of \u201canother personality\u201d, adding that perhaps this was done to \u201cdeflect attention\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI present myself for any probe in this regard,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ashraf called for the development of a mechanism to regulate commentary on social media while an investigation was ongoing. He noted that even his political opponents stood in solidarity with him. He reiterated his call for a \u201cmechanism or legal framework\u201d to prevent any further such incidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The PPP leader held that it was unfair to put people and their families under mental duress by partaking in such accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have faith that a solution can be found,\u201d he said, adding that there should not be a \u201cmedia trial\u201d of the innocent until proven guilty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the PPP leader brought attention to the matter, NA Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq called on Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar to present his point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his comments, Tarar expressed solidarity with Ashraf, stressing that the accusation was \u201cso frivolous in nature that no one here would ever pay heed to it\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe entire house stands with you,\u201d Tarar said, suggesting that perhaps the suspect was attempting to divert attention away from her case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tarar maintained that the matter would be taken to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, as well as the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, vowing that \u201caction will be taken at the state level\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cToday, it is you,\u201d he said, addressing Ashraf, \u201ctomorrow, it could be any one of us who may not have the grace to handle the situation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Tarar also assailed the media for \u201cvisually bombing\u201d the masses with the news of the suspect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAre there no other crimes happening in the country?\u201d Tarar asked, as he called on the media to factor in \u201cmorality, dignity and honour\u201d when airing such news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He assured the house that the ministry will investigate the matter. \u201cWhy did the lawyer give the statement later? The investigating officer will be asked and I will report back to this house\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cRaja sahib<\/em>, we are all aware that you are an honourable person and nothing can damage your reputation,\u201d Tarar told Ashraf. He also urged the Sindh inspector general of police to ensure that her court appearances were not televised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\u201cAppropriate measures should be taken, and she should be brought in quietly,\u201d he suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Subsequently, NA Speaker Sadiq said the menace of drugs was making the whole nation hollow, and the use of drugs in schools, colleges and universities must be checked strictly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
