{"id":126180,"date":"2026-05-19T11:17:43","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T06:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=126180"},"modified":"2026-05-19T11:17:44","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T06:17:44","slug":"four-killed-in-kenya-protests-over-rising-fuel-prices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/126180\/","title":{"rendered":"Four killed in Kenya protests over rising fuel prices"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NAIROBI(National Times)-  Four people died in protests in Kenya on Monday over fuel price hikes triggered by the Middle East war, while the public transport system was paralysed by demonstrators barricading roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of many African countries dependent on fuel imports from the Gulf, Kenya has been heavily hit by Iran\u2019s effective closure<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1994972\">&nbsp;<\/a>of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world\u2019s oil normally passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, the Kenyan government announced price hikes in response to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/2001381\/oil-prices-rise-2pc\">rising global oil prices<\/a>, including a 23.5-percent increase for diesel \u2014 triggering a call for the strike by transport workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protesters barricaded roads and lit bonfires on the outskirts of the capital, Nairobi, early on Monday and tried to stop cars and \u201cboda boda\u201d motorbikes, a journalist saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate that we lost four Kenyans in today\u2019s violence, which also saw more than 30 people injured,\u201d interior minister Kipchumba Murkomen told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While most of Kenya remained peaceful, he said \u201ccriminal elements\u201d had been mobilised to target government and personal property. He said it was \u201cunfortunate that today\u2019s protests have once again been hijacked by political actors for political ends\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police had made 348 arrests and the roads had now been cleared, he added.
