Bejing(National Times)- Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in Beijing on Tuesday for talks with his Chinese counterpart and his \u201clong-time good friend\u201d Xi Jinping, intending to show their ties are unshakeable days after a visit by Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The confirmation of Putin\u2019s trip came just hours after Trump wrapped <\/a>up his visit on Friday, the first by a US president to China in nearly a decade and one aimed at stabilising their turbulent relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin and Xi are set to discuss how to \u201cfurther strengthen\u201d Russia and China\u2019s strategic partnership and \u201cexchange views on key international and regional issues\u201d, according to a Kremlin statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their ties have deepened since Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, <\/a>with Putin visiting Beijing every year since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Setting warm tones for the visit, the two leaders exchanged \u201ccongratulatory letters\u201d on Sunday to mark 30 years of their countries\u2019 strategic partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xi said cooperation between Russia and China had \u201ccontinuously deepened and solidified\u201d, according to Chinese state media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And in a video message to the Chinese people released on Tuesday, Putin said relations have reached \u201ca truly unprecedented level\u201d and that \u201ctrade between Russia and China continues to grow\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe close strategic relationship between Russia and China plays a major, stabilising role globally. Without allying against anyone, we seek peace and universal prosperity,\u201d Putin added, without mentioning any third country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two leaders are also expected to sign a joint declaration after the talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>\u2018Dear, old friends\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When Putin last visited<\/a> Beijing in September 2025, Xi welcomed him with open arms as an \u201cold friend\u201d \u2014 language the Chinese leader did not extend to Trump last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Putin, who in turn called Xi his \u201cdear friend\u201d, will be keen to show the world their relations are unaffected by Trump\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Putin\u2019s visit is not expected to receive the same pomp as Trump\u2019s, \u201cthe Xi-Putin relationship does not require that kind of performative reassurance\u201d, said Patricia Kim from the Brookings Institution in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both sides view ties as \u201cstructurally stronger and more stable\u201d than China-US ones, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Beijing has regularly called for talks to end the war in Ukraine, now over four years long, it has never condemned Russia for sending in troops \u2014 presenting itself as a neutral party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump and Xi discussed <\/a>Ukraine last week, but the US president left China without a breakthrough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cXi will almost certainly brief Putin on his summit with Trump,\u201d Kim said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lack of clear outcomes from the Xi-Trump meeting though \u201clikely reassures Moscow that Xi did not strike any understanding with Trump that would materially undercut Russian interests\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Appetite for oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Putin will be hoping for China to deepen its commitment to Moscow, after Trump told Fox<\/em> News during his visit that Beijing had agreed to buy US oil to feed its \u201cinsatiable\u201d appetite for energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Russia reliant on sales to China to sustain its war effort, \u201cPutin does not want to lose that support\u201d, Asia Society\u2019s Lyle Morris told AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPutin will likely be keen to hear from Xi about China\u2019s next step in the Middle East,\u201d added Morris, after \u201cTrump signalled clearly that he hopes Beijing will play a leading role\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to the US-Israeli war on Iran though, China and Russia may have different priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c(China) relies on the freedom of the world\u2019s major waterways to sustain its economic activities, and would prefer that the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz end sooner rather than later,\u201d James Char of Singapore\u2019s Nanyang Technological University told AFP.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the other hand, Moscow has \u201cbeen benefitting economically from the fighting in Iran due to the relaxation of sanctions against Russian energy supplies, so may have a different view\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After meeting Xi in April, Russia\u2019s top diplomat Sergei Lavrov said Russia could \u201ccompensate\u201d for China\u2019s energy shortages as the war hits global supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExpanded energy ties may feature prominently at the meeting (as) Beijing seeks more Russian energy,\u201d said Joseph Webster from the Atlantic Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom Moscow\u2019s perspective, shipping more oil east may be more attractive in the wake of Ukraine\u2019s relentless campaign targeting Russian energy infrastructure,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
