GENEVA(National Times)- The World Health Organisation issued a strong warning on Friday over the rapid global expansion of nicotine pouch products, decrying the tobacco industry\u2019s aggressive marketing tactics to hook young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nicotine pouches, which are small sachets placed between the gum and lip that release nicotine through the lining of the mouth, are rapidly reshaping the global tobacco and nicotine market, the WHO said in a fresh report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cGovernments are seeing the use of these products spread quickly, especially among adolescents and young people who are being aggressively targeted by deceptive tactics,\u201d said Etienne Krug, head of WHO\u2019s health determinants, promotion and prevention department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The products, which contain nicotine and typically also sweet flavouring, \u201care engineered for addiction\u201d, he warned in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Often marketed as \u201cmodern\u201d, \u201cdiscreet\u201d and \u201ctobacco free\u201d, nicotine pouches are spreading across countries so fast that regulations are failing to keep pace, WHO warned in its first report on the products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
$7billion market<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Sales of nicotine pouches had reached over 23 billion units in 2024 \u2014 an increase of over 50 per cent from the previous year, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And the global nicotine pouch market was worth nearly $7 billion last year, it added, with sales highest and swelling in North America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One popular nicotine pouch brand that had been offered in around 9,000 US retail shops in 2017 was on sale in over 150,000 retail shops by 2024, it pointed out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Outside the United States, the pouches are most popular in European countries like Germany, Poland and Sweden, but are forecast to be fast-growing in a range of other countries, including Pakistan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is not simply a market trend; it\u2019s a rapidly evolving public health challenge,\u201d Vinayak Prasad, who heads WHO\u2019s Tobacco Free Initiative, told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The WHO emphasised that nicotine itself is \u201chighly addictive\u201d and is particularly harmful for young people whose brains are still developing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nicotine exposure during adolescence can affect brain development, including impact on attention and learning, and increases the likelihood of long-term dependence and use, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The report highlighted well-documented health risks associated with nicotine use, including for cardiovascular risk and mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Candy flavours<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It slammed widespread industry tactics to appeal to young people, including sleek packaging and flavours like bubble gup and gummy bears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Influencer marketing and heavy social media promotion was also used, as was sponsorship of concerts and sporting events like Formula 1, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And it decried messaging promoting the possibility of \u201cdiscreet\u201d use and avoiding detection by parents and teachers, with slogans including: \u201cForget the rules\u201d, and \u201cAnytime, anywhere\u201d, alongside images of places where smoking is typically banned, like restaurants and public transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Prasad slammed efforts by companies to present nicotine pouches as safer than traditional cigarettes, and even as tools to help smokers quit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" GENEVA(National Times)- The World Health Organisation issued a strong warning on Friday over the rapid global expansion of nicotine pouch products, decrying the tobacco industry\u2019s aggressive marketing tactics to hook young people.
