Bejing(National Times)- United States President Donald Trump said he made \u201cfantastic trade deals\u201d with Xi Jinping, as the pair met on Friday at final meetings of a superpower summit that, according to the US leader, has also reaped a\u00a0Chinese offer<\/a>\u00a0to help open the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump had arrived in Beijing seeking to seal deals in sectors including agriculture, aviation and artificial intelligence, as well as to contain differences between the two sides in a number of tense geostrategic areas \u2014 not least the Middle East war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s overtures to Xi, whom he described as a \u201cgreat leader\u201d and \u201cfriend\u201d, have so far been met with more muted tones by the Chinese leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the US leader said \u201ca lot of good\u201d has come out of the visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made some fantastic trade deals, great for both countries,\u201d he said, as Xi accompanied him through the gardens of Zhongnanhai, a central leadership compound next to Beijing\u2019s Forbidden City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Fox News<\/em> after the first day of the summit wrapped, Trump said the talks in Beijing had gone well and that Xi had agreed to several US wishlist points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the topic of the war in Iran, the US president said Xi had effectively assured his counterpart that China was not preparing to militarily aid Tehran, which has essentially closed the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe said he\u2019s not going to give military equipment \u2026 he said that strongly,\u201d Trump told Fox<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019d like to see the Hormuz Strait open, and said \u2018if I can be of any help whatsoever, I would like to help,\u2019\u201d Trump added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Asked whether the two leaders had discussed Iran, the Chinese foreign ministry on Friday released a statement calling for \u201ca comprehensive and lasting ceasefire\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShipping lanes should be reopened as soon as possible in response to the calls of the international community,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Boeing, soybeans and oil<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The warm handshakes and pomp on Thursday were somewhat overshadowed by a blunt warning from Xi on a much longer-standing geopolitical flashpoint, Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after talks started, Chinese state media reported Xi had told Trump that missteps on the sensitive issue of Taiwan could push their two countries into \u201cconflict\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fox News<\/em> interview did not touch upon Taiwan, and Trump did not comment to reporters when asked about the matter on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC<\/em> the president would say more \u201cin the coming days\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade is expected to be a focus of Friday\u2019s conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Fox interview, Trump said one big business deal had already been struck, saying Xi had agreed to purchase \u201c200 big\u201d Boeing jets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shares of the US aviation giant fell after Trump\u2019s comments, in a sign the market had expected a more robust purchase from China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The US president said Beijing had also voiced interest in buying US oil and soybeans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China, which is the key foreign customer of Iranian oil, bought small amounts of US oil before Trump imposed tariffs last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has sharply slowed down purchases of US soybeans, turning instead to Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC<\/em> that Trump and Xi were talking about setting up \u201cguardrails\u201d for the use of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bessent said the world\u2019s \u201ctwo AI superpowers are going to start talking\u201d, though US export controls on the advanced technology to China remain a sore point in relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

– Transcending the trap?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s visit to Beijing is the first by an American president in nearly a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Thursday, Xi referenced the \u201cThucydides Trap\u201d, a political theory referring to an increased likelihood of war when a rising new power competes with an established great power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xi said, however, that he thought the United States and China could \u201ctranscend\u201d this danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to the comments in a social media post in the early hours of Friday, Trump said Xi \u201cvery elegantly referred to the United States as perhaps being a declining nation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He insisted Xi was not referring to the United States under his watch, which he claimed was experiencing an \u201cincredible rise\u201d, but rather the country under his predecessor Joe Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo years ago, we were, in fact, a Nation in decline,\u201d Trump posted on his Truth Social site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow, the United States is the hottest Nation anywhere in the world, and hopefully our relationship with China will be stronger and better than ever before!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
