Web desk(National Times)- Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands will send planes to evacuate their citizens from a cruise ship bound for Tenerife, which was hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak, Spain\u2019s interior minister said in Madrid on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The European Union is sending two further planes for the remaining European citizens, Fernando Grande-Marlaska added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier, the World Health Organisation (WHO) chief said he had arrived in Spain and would join government officials to oversee the disembarkation of a hantavirus-hit cruise ship in the Canary Islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI arrived in Spain, where I will join senior government officials in a mission to Tenerife to oversee safe disembarkation of the passengers, crew members and health experts from MV Hondius cruise ship,\u201d Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on X, stressing, \u201cat this stage, there are no additional people on board showing symptoms of hantavirus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He noted that the risk to the Canary Islands and the rest of the world \u201cremains low\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Three passengers from the MV Hondius \u2014 a Dutch husband and wife and a German woman \u2014 have died<\/a>, while others have fallen sick with the rare disease, which usually spreads among rodents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The only hantavirus strain that can transmit from person to person \u2014 Andes virus \u2014 has been confirmed among those who have tested positive, fuelling international concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The Dutch-flagged vessel, which has around 150 people on board, is expected to arrive at the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Special flights will then take passengers to their home countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Earlier Friday, the WHO said<\/a> that the hantavirus outbreak posed a minimal risk to the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is a dangerous virus, but only to the person who\u2019s really infected, and the risk to the general population remains absolutely low,\u201d WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier told reporters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A picture was emerging from MV Hondius where \u201ceven those who have been sharing cabins don\u2019t seem to be both infected in some cases\u201d, when one has fallen sick, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe virus is not that contagious that it easily jumps from person to person,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The WHO said on Friday there were six confirmed out of eight suspected cases of the virus so far. There are no suspected cases remaining on the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A flight attendant on the Dutch airline KLM, who came into contact with an infected passenger from the cruise ship and later showed mild symptoms, tested negative for hantavirus, the WHO said on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The passenger \u2014 the wife of the first person to die in the outbreak \u2014 had briefly been on a plane bound from Johannesburg to the Netherlands on April 25, but was removed before take-off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n She died the following day in a Johannesburg hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spanish authorities said a woman on that flight was being tested for hantavirus, having developed symptoms at home in eastern Spain. She is in isolation in hospital, said health secretary Javier Padilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThis is a pretty unlikely case,\u201d he told reporters: someone \u201ctwo rows behind the person who died with hantavirus\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spanish interior ministry sources said a South African woman who was also on the flight \u201cis currently asymptomatic in South Africa after staying in Barcelona for a week before returning to her country\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Two Singapore residents who had been on the ship tested negative for the disease but would remain in quarantine, the city-state\u2019s authorities said Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The MV Hondius left Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1 for a cruise across the Atlantic Ocean to Cape Verde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Three suspected cases, including two crew members who later tested positive, were evacuated from Cape Verde to the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The third person tested negative, German authorities said on Friday, but would remain under observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Provincial health official Juan Petrina said there was an \u201calmost zero chance\u201d the Dutch man linked to the outbreak contracted the disease in Ushuaia based on the virus\u2019s incubation period, among other factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n YouTuber Kasem Ibn Hattuta, who is travelling on the Hondius, said passengers were reassured that doctors had joined the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe finally left Cape Verde, which was a relief for everyone on board, especially knowing that our sick colleagues are finally getting the medical care they need,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Everyone was keeping in high spirits, he added: \u201cPeople are smiling and taking the situation calmly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n People were wearing masks indoors and keeping their distance from others, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The United States said on Friday it was arranging an evacuation flight for Americans on the ship, who would then be taken to a quarantine facility in Nebraska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Spanish authorities have said the ship will anchor off Tenerife and will not be allowed to dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Passengers will be transferred to shore on a smaller vessel, then by bus to the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The evacuation must happen between Sunday and Monday due to likely adverse weather conditions afterwards, the Canarian regional government said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Dockers in Tenerife protested on Friday against the arrival of the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The cruise called at several remote British islands in the South Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n British health authorities said on Friday there was a suspected case on Tristan da Cunha, one of the world\u2019s most isolated settlements with around 220 people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Web desk(National Times)- Germany, France, Belgium, Ireland, and the Netherlands will send planes to evacuate their citizens from a cruise ship bound for Tenerife, which was hit by a deadly hantavirus outbreak, Spain\u2019s interior minister said in Madrid on Saturday.
