{"id":125559,"date":"2026-05-09T10:10:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-09T05:10:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=125559"},"modified":"2026-05-09T10:10:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-09T05:10:58","slug":"govt-hikes-petrol-by-rs14-92-per-litre-high-speed-diesel-by-rs15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/125559\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt hikes petrol by Rs14.92 per litre, high-speed diesel by Rs15"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>ISLAMABAD(National Times)- The government raised the price of petrol by Rs14.92 per litre and that of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs15 on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following the increase, the price of petrol stands at Rs414.78 per litre and HSD\u2019s at Rs414.58.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Petroleum Division\u2019s press release notifying the increase said the new prices would be effective from May 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Petrol is mostly used in private transport, small vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers and has a direct bearing on the budget of the middle and lower-middle class. High-speed diesel is mainly used in the heavy transport sector and for large generators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has been revising petroleum prices every week on Friday night following the now-paused US-Israeli war on Iran, which began on February 28. The war also led to a global fuel crunch caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world\u2019s supply of oil and gas used to pass in peace time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the US-Israeli war on Iran began, the government initially hiked&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1982275\"><u>petrol and diesel prices<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;by Rs55 per litre on March 6 and announced&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1980417\"><u>unprecedented austerity measures<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;on March 9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the following weeks, PM Shehbaz said he had rejected recommendations to increase fuel prices despite an increase in the global market on three occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But on April 2, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1987901\"><u>announced<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;an unprecedented increase of 43 per cent and 55pc in the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel, respectively. The ministers had also announced a targeted fuel subsidy programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, just a day later, PM Shehbaz&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1988380\"><u>slashed&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>the petroleum levy by Rs80 per litre and brought the price of petrol down to Rs378 per litre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 10, PM Shehbaz further&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1990554\"><u>decreased&nbsp;<\/u><\/a>diesel prices and petrol prices by Rs135 and Rs12 per litre, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the government&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1996451\">raised<\/a>&nbsp;the price of petrol by Rs6.51 per litre and that of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs19.39.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ISLAMABAD(National Times)- The government raised the price of petrol by Rs14.92 per litre and that of high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs15 on Friday.
