{"id":125229,"date":"2026-05-03T09:59:38","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T04:59:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=125229"},"modified":"2026-05-03T09:59:39","modified_gmt":"2026-05-03T04:59:39","slug":"spirit-airlines-shuts-down-globally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/125229\/","title":{"rendered":"Spirit Airlines shuts down globally"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON(National Times)-  US air carriers mobilised on Saturday to help passengers and crew members stranded by the overnight shutdown of Spirit Airlines, after last-minute talks with creditors and the White House collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The budget airline known for its bright yellow planes succumbed to crushing fuel prices and announced in the early hours of Saturday that \u201call flights have been cancelled, and customer service is no longer available\u201d as it \u201cstarted winding down its global operations, effective immediately.\u201d Other carriers, including American, Delta, United, and jetBlue, leapt at the news on Saturday, offering what some dubbed \u201crescue fares\u201d to those waking up with cancelled itineraries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some said they were increasing flights or the size of planes in and out of airports where Spirit had a significant presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carriers also sought to support marooned Spirit staff \u2014 and hire them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several carriers encouraged now-jobless crew members to apply to their open roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spirit had been in bankruptcy since August 2025 \u2014 its second in less than a year \u2014 and the White House had been considering a bailout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe recent material increase in oil prices and other pressures on the business have significantly impacted Spirit\u2019s financial outlook,\u201d the company said in a statement. \u201cWith no additional funding available to the company, Spirit had no choice but to begin this wind-down.\u201d It has promised refunds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US Transportation Secre\u00adtary Sean Duffy scrambled to defend the Trump administration\u2019s position as a rescue plan never materialised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe president was like a dog on a bone trying to figure out a way to keep Spirit afloat,\u201d Duffy said in a morn\u00ading press conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON(National Times)- US air carriers mobilised on Saturday to help passengers and crew members stranded by the overnight shutdown of Spirit Airlines, after last-minute talks with creditors and the White House collapsed.
