{"id":125131,"date":"2026-05-01T09:43:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T04:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=125131"},"modified":"2026-05-01T09:43:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T04:43:59","slug":"mamdani-calls-on-king-charles-to-return-koh-i-noor-diamond","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/125131\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamdani calls on King Charles to return Koh-i-Noor diamond"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Web Desk(National Times)- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for King Charles to \u201creturn\u201d the prized Koh-i-Noor diamond, which the British Empire took from the Indian subcontinent in the 1800s, on the third day of the monarch\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1995987\">state visit<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before greeting Charles and Queen Camilla at a 9\/11 memorial event, Mamdani was asked what he would discuss with the king if he had the chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf I was to speak to the king, separately from that, I would probably encourage him to return the Koh-i-Noor diamond,\u201d the leftist mayor said, adding that his focus would be honoring those killed in the terror attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s unclear whether Mamdani followed through and brought up the contentious subject with Charles when the two met.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The monarch was seen laughing with Mamdani and having a brief conversation after they shook hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Housed in the Tower of London, the massive 106 carat stone is the star of Britain\u2019s crown jewels, adorning the Crown of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ownership of the jewel has been contested over the centuries, passing through the hands of Mughal emperors, Iranian shahs and Sikh maharajas before the Kingdom of Punjab gave it to Queen Victoria in 1849 as part of a peace treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>India has repeatedly and unsuccessfully sought the return of the priceless jewel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While there is little doubt it was mined in India, its history thereafter is a mixture of myth and fact, with several countries including Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan also laying claim to the gem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A politician from the anti-immigration Reform UK party was quick to slam the comments as an \u201cinsult to our King.\u201d \u201cThis beautiful diamond is currently on display in the Tower of London,\u201d the party\u2019s home affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf said in an X post. \u201cThat is where it will stay\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Web Desk(National Times)- New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called for King Charles to \u201creturn\u201d the prized Koh-i-Noor diamond, which the British Empire took from the Indian subcontinent in the 1800s, on the third day of the monarch\u2019s\u00a0state visit\u00a0on Wednesday.
