{"id":125106,"date":"2026-05-01T08:58:57","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T03:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/?p=125106"},"modified":"2026-05-01T08:58:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T03:58:58","slug":"un-chief-warns-hormuz-closure-strangling-global-economy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/nationaltimes.pk\/eng\/2026\/125106\/","title":{"rendered":"UN chief warns Hormuz closure \u2018strangling\u2019 global economy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>UNITED NATIONS(National Times)-  The escalating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1995669\">crisis in the Strait of Hormuz\u00a0<\/a>could push tens of millions into poverty, trigger a surge in global hunger and even tip the world toward recession, United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The closure of the vital waterway is \u201cstrangling the global economy,\u201d the secretary general said in remarks to the press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guterres decried the restrictions on free passage through the strait, a crucial chokepoint, which he said is impeding the delivery of oil, gas, fertiliser and other critical commodities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if restrictions on shipping and trade were lifted immediately, \u201csupply chains will take months to recover, prolonging lower economic output and higher prices,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting out three possible trajectories for a world still reeling from the shocks of a pandemic and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dawn.com\/news\/1715563\">war in Ukraine<\/a>, Guterres said the best-case scenario would see global growth fall from 3.4 per cent to 3.1pc, with inflation rising to 4.4pc and trade slowing sharply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If disruptions arising from Iranian attacks and threats and the US blockade of Iranian ports continue through midyear, the consequences would deepen significantly, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under that scenario, 32 million people would be pushed into poverty, 45 million more would face extreme hunger as fertiliser runs low and crop yields fall, and \u201chard-won development gains\u201d could be reversed overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a worst-case scenario, where severe disruptions persist through the end of the year, \u201cwe confront the spectre of a global recession with dramatic impacts on people, on the economy, and on political and social stability,\u201d he warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese consequences are not cumulative. They are exponential,\u201d Guterres stressed, cautioning that the longer the vital artery is choked, the harder it will be to reverse the damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guterres highlighted diplomatic efforts underway to break the deadlock in the US-Iran talks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy message to all parties is clear: Navigational rights and freedoms must be restored immediately,\u201d Guterres said. \u201cOpen the Strait. Let all ships pass.
