TEHRAN(National Times)- Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei declared on Thursday that the United States had suffered a shameful defeat, defiantly rejecting a warning from President Donald Trump that an economically punishing US naval blockade could be enforced for months to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, two months after the largest military deployment and aggression by the world\u2019s bullies in the region, and the United States\u2019 disgraceful defeat in its plans, a new chapter is unfolding for the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d said Khamenei in the message <\/a>read on state television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The message by Khamenei, who has yet to appear in public since his appointment<\/a> on March 9 as Iran\u2019s new supreme leader, came on the annual national celebration of \u201cPersian Gulf\u201d day in Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khamenei became the supreme leader after the US and Israel launched a massive campaign of strikes<\/a> on Iran on February 28, assassinating <\/a>his father and predecessor, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his Thursday message, he said US bases in the region \u201clack even the capacity to ensure their own security, let alone provide any hope of securing their allies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hailed what he called Iran\u2019s \u201cnew legal framework and management\u201d of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key energy chokepoint, as a means to bring \u201ccomfort and progress\u201d for countries in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strait has become a major flashpoint <\/a>since the outbreak of the Middle East war, with Iran allowing only a trickle of ships to pass through the waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Khamenei, in his message, predicted a bright future for the Gulf without the US and condemned what he described as \u201coutsiders\u201d, saying those who interfere from thousands of kilometres away \u201chave no place there except at the bottom of its waters\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe record of repeated invasions by European and American foreigners \u2014the insecurities, damages, and multiple threats they have imposed on the region\u2019s countries \u2014 reflects only a fraction of the malicious schemes of global oppressors against the peoples of the Persian Gulf,\u201d the message read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also lauded the people of Iran, who he said \u201cconsider all national capacities \u2014 identity, spiritual, human, scientific, industrial, and advanced technologies from nano and bio to nuclear and missile \u2014 as their national capital\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier on Thursday, Iran\u2019s President Masoud Pezeshkian had said a US naval blockade imposed in retaliation against Iran\u2019s action in Hormuz was \u201cdoomed to fail\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pezeshkian added that such measures would \u201cnot only fail to enhance regional security, but are in fact a source of tension and a disruption to lasting stability in the Persian Gulf\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other figures have also struck a tone of defiance, with Navy Commander Shahram Irani signalling that Iran will deploy \u201cin the very near future\u201d naval weaponry which it has recently developed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
